Why I volunteer when I can… This was me yesterday, about to begin volunteering for the day with Seaful charity and the amazing events they host; connecting people with waterways and educating young people about ocean protection. I’ve been supporting Seaful and a number of other charities, since becoming self-employed and here’s my reasons why… 1) To stay connected with and support causes which I believe in, and which align with my own personal values. 2) To escape the ‘busy-loneliness’ of being self-employed (if you know, you know) and connect with cool people who share my values too. 3) To maintain a sense of balance, and not become swamped with the need for revenue-based activity all the time. 4) Because volunteering is cool 😎 and yes, it’s OK to feel good about doing it too. Happy National Guide Dog Month! Did you know that training a guide or helper dog for service requires extensive preparation? It costs about $50,000 to cover all the necessary expenses, but these services are provided at no cost to those in need. National Guide Dog Month aims to raise awareness of the significant assistance guide dogs offer to visually or physically impaired individuals and to raise funds to provide guide dogs to everyone who requires them. This month, let's show our appreciation for guide dogs by taking some time to learn more about them. You can also help out by donating to your local guide dog organization or volunteering to spend time training guide dogs. Together, we can make a difference!

Just two weeks to go before the WD Geocaching Adventure in support of our Charity of the Year, PROMISEworks. Never done (or heard of?!) geocaching before? It’s a simple concept: use an app to locate items (“caches”) left behind by previous walkers and, if you find them, record your achievement before placing it back for the next adventurer! And if you’re struggling to find it, use the helpful hints or user comments to narrow it down. Geocaching is a popular activity for the young people supported by PROMISEworks, and enables mentors to get them outdoors and active during their time together. Today we pause to remember and reflect on a day that changed our world forever.   September 11 has been designated as a National Day of Service and Remembrance, inspired in large part by the charitable service and goodwill that emerged from communities and individuals immediately following that fateful day.   At Metsä Board Americas, community service is an important part of our DNA. Our own initiatives include TICCIT (trees into cartons, cartons into trees). Developed by the Paperboard Packaging Council, it involves visiting elementary schools to teach about recycling and the importance of trees to our environment.   Our Norwalk, CT office also participates in food drives for our local food pantry as well as various other volunteer activities.   Here are some things you can do:   - Volunteer at your own local shelter or food bank. Many organizations coordinate events specifically for today.   -  Donate blood. There's always a need, and it's a lifesaving gift.   - Visit a fire or police station to express your gratitude for their continuous service.   - Organize community clean-ups. Beautify parks, streets, or beaches in your area.   - Engage in random acts of kindness. A simple gesture can make a significant impact.   By volunteering, reaching out, and lifting up those around us, we ensure that the legacy of September 11 is not solely one of loss but also one of strength, unity, and selfless service.   #PatriotDay #NeverForget #DayOfServiceAndRemembrance

Walk in the Park: Dog Distraction Class It’s a different kind of walk in the park at See Differently’s weekly dog distraction classes for our pups in training. At these sessions, volunteers guide the pups through various exercises designed to help them stay focused (despite lots of tempting distractions like other dogs, toys, and people). Sofie and Bree from the puppy team lead the class with lots of tips and tricks to keep the students on the right track! Teaching our dogs these skills early on is essential for them to become well-trained and reliable companions. We're looking for more volunteers to help raise and train our next generation of See Differently guide or assistance dogs. We have various volunteering opportunities to suit everyone. Did you know that this month is American Red Cross Month?⛑️ It's important to recognize the vital role that the organization plays in supporting communities across the country. One of the most critical areas of focus for the Red Cross is home fire prevention and relief. Every year, thousands of families are impacted by devastating home fires, and the Red Cross is there to provide support and assistance in the aftermath. As one of their Safety Campaigns, the Red Cross works to educate families on fire safety and prevention. In addition, they offer resources and support to help families get back on their feet after a fire, including temporary shelter, food, and clothing. Choose Senior Gleaners on Giving Tuesday Thanks to volunteers, residents and grocers, we are on track to recover about 150,000 pounds of food otherwise wasted this year. Since 1994, volunteers and people or businesses with extra food have fed hundreds of thousands of hungry county residents. What if we all came together to support this mission. We can! Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving on November 28 and Senior Gleaners is participating. Giving Tuesday will be the start of a fundraising drive to purchase a new or late model van next year. Our goal is to raise $11,000 in the next few months to match a grant from the City of San Diego for this purpose. Our website "Donate" button at www.seniorgleanerssdco.org will connect you to many ways to contribute. Next year will mark our 30th anniversary and we plan to celebrate in several ways.
