One of our standout volunteering events each year is Boat For Hope, a pirate-themed adventure on False Creek supporting Variety, the Children's Charity. Boat for Hope originated in 1998 when James Safronek and Rick Cassels, a longtime Mustang Survival team member, were enjoying a sunny afternoon in Vancouver’s False Creek. Over a meal and a drink, James reflected on how fortunate he was to have access to experiences on the water, especially on a boat. Inspired, they quickly put a plan in motion, making Boat for Hope a reality. Since 1999, Variety’s Boat for Hope has provided a unique boating experience for children with disabilities, as well as their caregivers and families. For the hundreds of kids who participate each year, it’s a thrilling opportunity to sail with pirates and simply enjoy being a kid.
