I was working on an article about how, with the help of handful of local nonprofits and one local business, Sacramento native Shakela Wade navigated her way out of homelessness in about six months. She invited me to interview her in her apartment on Stockton Boulevard. When I got there, I was impressed with the fun colors of the buildings, the lovely grounds and the nice apartments at this affordable housing community. If I was just starting out, I thought, I'd consider this complex. The thing is, these apartments are only available to people whose incomes are low. That means most Sacramento-area residents will never see what these affordable housing communities look like. I wanted to show people what I had seen, so before Mutual Housing California opened its newest community, I asked them to allow me to give Bee readers a peek inside. Here's a look at the Wong Center Senior Apartments for low-income Sacramentans who are age 55 or older. As a cyclist, my favorite part was the bike room. It had racks where residents can secure their bikes and do some maintenance. There's an entry to the room from inside the building and an exit that goes right out to the parking lot.
