Among the solutions: ➡️ Justice: Center environmental justice, health equity and housing needs to build the diverse coalitions vital to enacting climate policies; ➡️ Indigenous leadership: Fully incorporate Indigenous people and their ecological knowledge in government, in both state environmental policy and in wildfire management; ➡️ Add greenery to cool heat islands: Add more greenery to cities to lower the temperature around heat islands, add shade and reduce heat risks in low-income communities; ➡️ Expand marshlands to protect coasts: Allow for landward expansion of coastal wetlands and marshes—sometimes into agricultural land—to gain protection against sea-level rise, storm surges and saltwater inundation of freshwater ecosystems; ➡️ Denser cities, fewer houses in wildfire zones: Increase firewise planning, such as where to allow development and what materials can be used, to reduce wildfire encroachment on suburban and urban areas and to protect housing. https://lnkd.in/ey_an6mu

Yesterday's participation in the ACCTING webinar was fantastic! I learned so much about the crucial role local communities play in responding to natural disasters and preserving ecosystems. 🌟 I emphasized the importance of accessibility for the 15% of the world's population with disabilities, who are often excluded from climate change discussions, policies, risk management plans, and advocacy. Here are the key points I shared: - Accessible risk management: Risk management plans should include people with disabilities from the start. Exclusion can lead to ineffective measures, like alarm systems that don't consider those who are deaf or hard of hearing, leaving them out of the support system. - Policy consideration: Policies must listen to the needs of people with disabilities. For example, the campaign to ban plastic straws did not take into account that while plastic straws are seen as unnecessary for many, they are essential for the independence of people with mobility impairments or chronic pain. Eco-ableism should be avoided. - Accessible advocacy: Climate advocacy must be accessible. This means including alt text for images, which is vital for those using screen readers, and captions for videos, crucial for people who can't hear. We need more voices at the climate table. “Managed retreat” refers to a gradual pullback from the coast to move development out of harm’s way. It is a term that the Pacifica City Council rejected outright when preparing a 2020 draft of their Local Coastal Land Use Plan, a document that regulates land use, resource protection, and development along the coast. The California Coastal Commission requires consideration of managed retreat options. Southern Arizona has a network of cooling centers, but as more extreme heat days drive demand, there are challenges in access, visibility, and capacity. These climate change effects are clear, as are the impacts of inaction, which is why Justicia Juntos, an initiative led by Amistades, Inc., is a great model for cities seeking meaningful partnerships that result in true community change.
