The U.S. Battery Machine Builders welcome the updates made by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in the second round of up to $6 billion in allocations for the 48C Program. Cleveland-Cliffs: Cleveland-Cliffs Announces Its New State-of-the-Art Electrical Transformer Production Plant in Weirton, West Virginia Cleveland-#Cliffs Inc. (NYSE: CLF) announced today that it will establish a new electrical distribution transformer production plant in Weirton, West Virginia. This downstream direct investment by Cleveland-Cliffs in Weirton will address the critical shortage of distribution transformers that is stifling economic growth across the United States. Lourenco Goncalves, Cleveland-Cliffs' Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer will host a press conference with West Virginia Governor Jim Justice and other elected officials in Weirton today, July 22. The announcement will highlight Cleveland-Cliffs’ investment to repurpose its Half Moon Warehouse in Weirton to commence production of three-phase distribution #transformers used in electric power distribution systems. The total capital investment is $150 million, of which $50 million (or one third) will be granted by the state of West Virginia to Cliffs through a forgivable loan. Cliffs expects the new plant to come online in the first half of 2026. The efficiency standards for distribution transformers recently promulgated by the U.S. Department of Energy support the long-term utilization of highly-efficient American-made Grain Oriented Electrical #Steel (#GOES), ensuring the viability of this investment in Weirton. This investment will result in reemployment opportunities for 600 USW-represented workers from the indefinitely idled Weirton tinplate mill. The new electrical transformer plant will also generate additional demand for American-made GOES, exclusively produced in the United States by Cleveland-Cliffs, at its Butler Works steel mill in Butler, Pennsylvania. Additional demand for GOES will ultimately result in additional production of GOES at Butler Works, generating the opportunity of employment expansion for the UAW-represented workforce in Butler, Pennsylvania. In addition to Cliffs’ GOES, the new transformer plant in West Virginia will also consume stainless and carbon steel produced by Cliffs in several other of its steel plants in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana. Behind The Meter Batteries - Customer Owned Utilities reduce peak generation and industry gets FAT rate reductions for going off-grid.   Peak shaving via voluntary 'demand management' has no up front costs for utilities. For industry it can be designed around 'social engineering' (getting people to turn things off) OR on-site batteries/generation. Low margin industries make do with production curtailment, and redirect staff to preventative maintenance. Running on batteries allows industries with MUST RUN production processes to participate in peak shaving. How much do industries gain by going off-grid for 4-hours ten times a year? In Ontario they can cut their electricity bill by up to 50%! (For power hungry factories this can significantly increase profits with marginal production change) Peak shaving is a low cost tool to enable clean generation and reward industry. The vast majority of the time people won’t buy from you to gain something. They buy from you to alleviate some sort of pain. “We can save you money on your energy spend” Vs “You’re already spending 2.3x what you need to be on energy” Also… Big one here…. Stop selling to people who don’t neeed what you sell. If you are contacting empty warehouses small office blocks — they are not worth speaking to. Find a specific industry (Cold Storage, Engineering) Say “Hi John I know you’re in the Engineering industry… Guessing your usage is a pain in the arse…” “Yes Roman it is” — this statement means please put solar on my roof. Now follow up with that lead until the solar is on the roof or they file a restraining order. Sorted.

The U.S. Department of Energy has recognized General Motors for its decarbonization efforts, awarding it a 2024 Better Project Award for its steam elimination and heat recovery system aimed at reducing natural gas use.  General Motors’ assembly plant in Fort Wayne, Indiana, cut carbon emissions by 30%, against a 2019 baseline year. The process involved eliminating steam usage for comfort heating and freeze protection by swapping a natural gas-fired steam system for a combined heat and power system, which uses heat exchangers to recover waste from pre-existing landfill gas-powered generators on-site, the department announced Wednesday. This recovered heat is sufficient to provide more than 80% of the General Motors site’s building heating needs while reducing natural gas usage on-site, DOE said in a news release. The company is now evaluating other sites where this approach can be replicated as part of a broader goal of cutting energy use by 25% across 33 facilities, per the release.
