18 years ago, Wallonia decided to make innovation the key to its economic policy and launched the competitiveness clusters. This was a bold move by the government: shifting away from surface-level approaches, organising innovation initiatives around promising sectors, and delegating leadership to local participants. Today, the world has changed. The challenges facing the Clusters have grown, making innovation increasingly necessary and cross-sectoral. In response, the clusters have adapted to meet the changing needs. Over the years, the 6 clusters have financed as many projects via their traditional tools (calls for projects) as via all the other schemes created specifically to boost innovation. Their neutrality, the agility of their structure, the robustness of their processes and their in-depth knowledge of the local and European economic ecosystem have enabled them to evolve with the times and remain the catalyst and integrator of innovation in Wallonia. 🔵 The second pilot event within the framework of the Eramus+ Change Agents initiative took place at the UDK Berlin, with the attendance of all project partners Elisava Research, MOME Budapest - Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (Budapest), Universität der Künste Berlin, Estonian Academy of Arts (Tallin), Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Shenkar - Engineering. Design. Art. Following internal partner-meetings aiming at outlining the content and structure of the Blueprint - the main project output which will inform inter-institutional collaborations between HEIs and NGOs - an open event ‘In Conversation - Change Agents exploring inter-institutional collaborations’ was organized in form of presentations and a panel, featuring guests from diverse fields. Off-site visits complemented the 2-day program, focusing on municipal neighborhood initiatives in the contexts of the city, such as a neighborhood walk and visit in Schöneberg with Nara Bretfeld at the local Stadtteil Center. The project will run until the end of this year and conclude with a public conference at Elisava, where the results of the 2-year collaboration will be shared with the public. Johanna Lindberg's PhD on Inclusive Digital Transformation in Rural Areas is supported by Norrlandsnavet—a centre dedicated to business development in northern Sweden—this initiative is a collaborative effort with the Kamprad Family Foundation and Luleå University of Technology. Johanna's research focuses on digitalizing village associations and rural retail stores in Norrbotten and Västerbotten, aiming to boost accessibility and enhance services through with the help of research and education. For those of us that care about shaping a better future for the world, where we are right now feels challenging, uncertain and complex. When you're faced with complex challenges getting different perspectives is really helpful for making sense of things and working out a way forward. Consequently, it was a great pleasure to be part of Business Fights Poverty's online written discussion last month that tapped into the collective wisdom of a diverse community of social impact professionals concerning the state of world. The format was innovative and proved to be an efficient way to ensure that a large number of views could be expressed and received. There's no doubt that there are many challenges but there are also opportunities and an increasing number of approaches that are being used to tackle complex social challenges effectively. It's also reassuring to know that there are people out there that care and are prepared to do something about it. The overarching theme is the need to collaborate. Absolutely thrilled to have had the opportunity to be involved in the recent Roundtable with the Chinese Ambassador organised by John McLean OBE, Chairman of China UK Business Development Centre and the Institute of Directors (IoD). During the two-hour session, HE Ambassador Zheng shared insights on the five major opportunities and three challenges China is seeing. Attendees engaged in an open dialogue with HE Ambassador Zheng and Minister Counsellor Bao Ling, discussing their concerns and aspirations about expanding into China. As a Chinese national living and working in the UK for more than two decades, on behalf of my startup OrinTent , I spoke passionately about seeing is believing. China is a massive market with tremendous demand and opportunities.
