We’ve been talking this month about how NHS organisations can save money by reducing the large sums they spend on temporary staff. Managing sickness and other issues to ensure that nursing numbers are always at safe levels in hospitals can be difficult – but often that’s where the greatest savings can be made. Why? Because many NHS trusts don’t routinely employ enough nurses to fill all the gaps. As a result, they have to buy in staff on a daily basis. The first port of call is the nursing bank, where existing staff can volunteer for extra shifts. However, they can earn significantly more for the same work by signing up to an external agency – and that’s where costs can really escalate. Kingsgate can help keep that additional spending to a minimum. This involves drawing on our years of experience to study in detail how nurses are being rostered. However, the big picture matters too. Under-recruiting is a false economy, which inevitably leads to higher agency costs. It’s also important to focus on retaining staff by ensuring they feel valued and have good working conditions. #NHS #nursing #efficiency

This is the #Clogged #NDISPathway that doesn't seem to get reported, as revealed in #FOI documents I spoke about in my recent submission and post. According to the NDIA reporting over the last year, there has never been a backlog for this Participant Service Guarantee (PSG).” Ain't #Algorithms great? The *ONLY* way to fix the #NDIS and the #CloggedPathway, is to strip-down and rebuild the #NDIA. And that will take a #RoyalCommission to get under the covers. Unfortunately, the #NDIA was not part of the #NDISReview Terms of Reference. The NHS Nursing Shortage: A Critical Issue Amid Reforms Today, Keir Starmer outlined his vision for NHS reform, focusing on investment in digital technologies, more care in the community, and a bigger emphasis on prevention. These are positive steps toward a more modern and efficient healthcare system. But with approx 40,000 nurse vacancies in NHS England alone, one has to ask: Where will the staff come from to support these reforms? Building a sustainable NHS requires more than technology and strategy; it demands investment in people. The existing nursing shortage is already stretching the system to its limits, affecting patient care and staff morale. Without a clear plan to address this critical gap—whether through better recruitment, retention strategies, or international hires—these reforms will face an uphill battle. The success of any healthcare system starts with its workforce. The Independent Sector. The NHS. Both co-exist, but not quite in collaboration with each other. In some instances we know they can, unfortunately work against one another. Why should they work in partnership? They both offer services the other could not, be it in terms of demand outweighing services available, or it could be specific treatments etc. They refer patients to one another. The patient journey will, more often than not, find itself between the two. Care delivery and the patient journey should be fluid, should it not? Let's look at the detail: What's the mission of the NHS? 1. Improve health and care outcomes 2. Improve people's experiences of health and care services 3. Reduce pressure on frontline services 4. Make health and care services more efficient (NHS website, 2023) In the Independent Sector, missions and aims will look differently, according to each organisation, but I think we will all agree that they are of a similar nature, specifically to the first 2 for the NHS. So if our mission is the same, or similar, why are we not sharing best practices and key learns/resources across both sectors? Surely that will enhance patient experience? Staff retention and attraction? Ultimately, we enter the #Nursing & #SocialCare sectors because we care about people, and want to make a difference and positively impact peoples' wellbeing. Whilst an advocate for the Independent Sector, having worked in this area for nearly 20 years, I also very much value the NHS and everything it aims to achieve and can really see the value of collaboration. You can imagine my excitement to see the Independent Sector being welcomed to the arena, to stand alongside our colleagues in the #NHS at the #RCN Congress in #Wales next month. How wonderful to bring colleagues from all corners of Nursing together, to learn, debate, share ideas and network with peers. The itinerary looks set to cater for so many areas and interests. The country's largest employer, the NHS, might be involved in a scam, with over 700 healthcare workers implicated 😓 💊 🏥 👨⚕️ Many NHS frontline staff continue to treat patients, but they're under scrutiny for allegedly faking qualifications in a significant scam. Shockingly, around 700 nurses could be involved, raising concerns about the potential negative impact on NHS patients, according to the Royal College of Nursing. The NHS relies on three fundamental elements: capital, medical technologies, and what economists crudely call the labor force. This workforce, including nurses, doctors, and administrators, is crucial to the success of the universal healthcare system. Without well trained nurses, there's a risk to patients' health, especially in areas like intensive therapy units. I've had roommates who were nurses from different countries, and they emphasised the extensive training and quality control they undergo. The privatization of Canadian nursing care is an issue. As public hospitals struggle with unprecedented staffing shortages for—profit agencies have moved in to finish the staffing demolition in public facilities. For anybody worried about costs read about the enormous costs being channeled to these for—profit companies.
