👉Conclusions of my talk tonight at the Data Science Leuven: What a heated discussion with our local data scientists and engineers about the EU's #AIAct!! 🔥🔥🔥 - How necessary is #AI legislation? - Wouldn't this kill innovation? - We understand the intentions but is this really the best approach with such high compliance load? - What about the open source community? So far, US bigtech 🇺🇲has been shaping the discussions whereas EU startups 🇪🇺have been mostly left out. What's the logic in that? 🙄 🙏EU #startups need to be included in the implementation of the AI regulation, and further definition work by the future #AIoffice. The European Commission needs to take into account the education, training and communication about it, to raise the morale and awareness among the European tech community. You might have seen that today the Commission has launched a package of measures to support European startups and SMEs in the development of trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (AI). Probably the creation of the AI Office will make the headlines. Still, a couple of points that should not go unnoticed for the health sector 👇 1️⃣ the ‘GenAI4EU' initiative, which aims to support the development of novel use cases and emerging applications in Europe's 14 industrial ecosystems, including health and biotech. The initiative will encourage the development of large open innovation ecosystems though funding opportunities and by fostering collaboration between AI startups and deployers of AI in industry and the public sector. 2️⃣ a new Staff Working Document on common European data spaces has also been published. This is part of the initiative to accelerate the development and deployment of Common European Data Spaces. This is important for the AI community, for whom data is a key resource to train and improve their models. I share the full version below, just a spoiler on where are we regarding the European Health Data Space:   ✔ Achieved milestones   -Proposal on the European Health Data Space (EHDS) (May 2022) -Establishment of European principles for the secondary use of health data (TEHDAS) (July 2023) 🔜 Future milestones -Pilot version of the EHDS infrastructure for secondary use of health data ‘HealthData@EU’ (EU4Health, 2022-24) -Expansion of the geographical coverage of MyHealth@EU for primary use of health data (ongoing) -Preparation of the establishment of Health Data Access Bodies in the Member States (EU4Health, 2024-27) -Deployment of a European federation for cancer images (DIGITAL, 2023-26) -Deployment of a European Genomic Data Infrastructure (DIGITAL, 2022-26)

Paris is the home of a recently established #generative AI firm. Yet, Bioptimus's unique approach to applying all of the knowledge we've gained about AI models in the last few years while keeping a strict, biologically-focused focus makes it intriguing. Because training data access in biology is more complicated, it is appropriate to launch a firm with a sole #concentration on the subject. Although OpenAI is gradually shifting its focus from web crawling to content publisher #license agreements, Bioptimus is confronted with distinct data difficulties due to its handling of confidential clinical data that isn't accessible to the public. Bioptimus will also require a significant investment since, like other AI businesses, it will employ skilled researchers and train its models on pricey GPUs. For this reason, #SofinnovaPartners is leading a $35 million seed round that the business is financing. Participating in this fundraising round were Bpifrance's Large Venture fund, Frst, Cathay #Innovation, Headline, Hummingbird, NJF Capital, Owkin, Top Harvest Capital, and Xavier Niel. Bioptimus is not an overnight sensation. Jean-Philippe Vert will lead the business as executive chairman and co-founder, serving in a non-operational capacity. He works as the chief research and development officer at Owkin, a French #biotech unicorn that uses AI to find novel medications and enhance diagnostics. As a former senior research scientist at Google, Bioptimus' CTO, Rodolphe Jenatton, possesses greater expertise in artificial #intelligence. Hanneke van der Klis was one of the founders of DigiShape in 2019 and chairs the partner council. "At the time, we started with van Oord, Rijkswaterstaat and Deltares with what was then called a 'living lab from the Top Sector Water'," she says. "Since then, with a network of hundreds of professionals and 18 partners, we have become the platform that fulfils the need and necessity to get digital transformation properly on the water agenda." The recent affiliation with the Nederlandse AI Coalitie | NL AIC adds further acceleration to this. The key to DigiShape's success? "That there is an intrinsic motivation among the partners to participate. DigiShape does not have a bag of money from which to fund our projects, and yet everyone participates."
