But that is not the whole answer. Because the proliferation of antisemitism, as always, is a symptom. When antisemitism moves from the shameful fringe into the public square, it is not about Jews. It is never about Jews. It is about everyone else. It is about the surrounding society or the culture or the country. It is an early warning system—a sign that the society itself is breaking down. That it is dying.  It is a symptom of a much deeper crisis—one that explains how, in the span of a little over 20 years since Sept 11, educated people now respond to an act of savagery not with a defense of civilization, but with a defense of barbarism... If you study history and if you look at where Jews stand, for better and usually for worse, you will understand where a culture, where a country, where a civilization stands. Whether it’s on the way up or whether it’s on the way down. Whether it’s expanding its freedoms. Or whether it’s contracting them. Where liberty thrives, Jews thrive. Where difference is celebrated, Jews are celebrated. Where freedom of thought and faith and speech are protected, Jews tend to be, too. And when such virtues are regarded as threats, Jews will be regarded as the same. As goes Ohio, so goes the nation. The Jews—please don’t quote me on this—are Ohio."

In it, we describe in painstaking detail how China and Russia use social media (and AI) to flood our information ecosystem with messages aimed at undermining confidence in our own institutions and confusing us about America's role in the world. Since the book was published, the New York Times has disclosed that the Chinese used AI to generate fake posts about the fire in Maui being the result of a secret U.S. government "weather weapon" and have implanted malware in America's critical infrastructure that our intelligence and law enforcement agencies cannot fully locate and remove. This new study is welcome but why do we keep rediscovering the same things without taking any meaningful reaction in response? Don’t you love when someone has the courage to stand up to the bully? Gotta love Douglas Murray for not falling into the greatest trap of public debating – which is letting the bully cut you off in order to ruin your argument. You also have to love Murray’s ability to express a very simple truth: 1) The definition of terrorism is the deliberate targeting of civilians. 2) On October 7th, Hamas murdered, raped, decapitated, and kidnapped more than 1,000 innocent Israelis, deliberately targeting civilians. 3) The IDF only targets terrorists; but in EVERY war, there are unfortunate civilian casualties. This is not only Douglas Murrary being Douglas Murray; this is a masterclass on how to debate the types of bullies who will try to cut you off while you attempt to share an argument that would undermine their entire narrative.
