Utilities are facing increasing pressure to undertake a greater amount of capital projects. Many are dealing with aging infrastructure that requires significant upgrades or replacements, including everything from power lines and water pipes to gas distribution networks. For example, the American Water Works Association estimates that $1 trillion will be needed over the next 25 years to repair and upgrade water infrastructure, while many of the nation’s 3,300 electric and 1,200 gas utilities are dealing with infrastructure that was built decades ago. The rise in number of extreme weather events—2023 was a historic year of U.S. billion-dollar climate disasters, according to NOAA—has increased the importance of strengthening assets or making them more resilient.  Our three part report illuminates the trends behind the increasing number of capital projects that need to be completed, the rough seas utilities are navigating, and now utilities are strategizing along long-term planning. Two exciting announcements today from Washington:   🇺🇸 The White House has announced a goal to upgrade 100,000 miles of transmission lines over the next five years "by deploying modern grid technologies like #HighPerformanceConductors."    ⚡ DOE will be issuing a final rule today to fast-track NEPA reviews, via categorical exclusions, for projects that use existing transmission rights of way. This means that VEIR deployments in existing rights-of-way will not be subject to full federal NEPA reviews, a process that takes 6.5 years on average for transmission line projects. (Source: American Clean Power) We are proud to be a co-founder of the Advancing Modern Power Lines (AMP) Coalition, created last year with the mission of utilizing high-capacity conductors to increase grid capacity, resilience, reliability, and energy efficiency. The increasing demands on the nation’s aging grid, coupled with the needs of global clean energy transition, require urgent collective action to advance next-gen solutions (including reconductoring, replacement, and “right-sizing”) for new and existing transmission infrastructure. Today's announcements are a direct result of AMP and others' advocacy.
