We are thrilled as NAFDAC holds the 2nd Regional Workshop on Manufacturing of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) and Excipients in Nigeria from the 29th - 31st of July 2024 at the Lagos Marriott Hotel, Lagos State.
My Op-Ed in Business Line on 30 April 2024. The analysis shows that India's dependence on china for active pharmaceutical ingredients have increased in recent past. Then, what about the impact of the PLI Scheme that focuses on reducing import dependence? An analysis of some of the products covered by the scheme shows a mixed result. It appears that the scheme is yet to be acclimatised with the dynamics of the API segment which is dominated by small and medium enterprises.

In recent months, several countries have called for bringing back pharma production (including finished dosages and active pharmaceutical ingredients) to locations within national borders, also known as reshoring. This blog explains what the authorities have in mind, how it specifically relates to APIs, and the role Teva api is playing in this discussion. Read it now!

“Currently, Nigeria manufactures only about 25% of its pharmaceutical needs, with a staggering 70 per cent imported from other nations. It would be much easier to regulate the quality of manufactured medicines if they are locally produced.”
If you are just like me, you’d agree that those figures do not look good.
In a study by my colleague Melody Okereke, there are over 115 registered pharmaceutical manufacturers in Nigeria, but we still depend on other countries for the supply of active pharmaceutical ingredients and excipients.
In an interview with the Nigerian Tribune, I highlighted some issues we are faced with as it relates to the affordability, accessibility and quality of medicines in Nigeria.

Achieving ATEX Approval For Pharmaceutical Manufacture Fluid Control Automation
Pharmaceutical plants and those creating active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) face many challenges in delivering end products to the highest standards. With a variety of solvents and other combustible ingredients used for manufacturing, many production areas are classified under ATEX/Ex regulations, which stipulate rigorous build specifications for all equipment installed in zoned areas. #piimagnews https://ow.ly/Cw7j50QrC1u
Italy's recent decision to ban synthetic foods and restrict the use of "meat" for plant-based products is a step backward in food innovation. Here’s why:
Sustainability: Synthetic and plant-based foods offer a way to feed the growing population while reducing environmental impact. Lab-grown meat can cut emissions by 96% and uses 99% less land than livestock farming.
Health & Safety: These foods undergo rigorous testing, offering controlled nutritional content and reducing contamination risks compared to traditional meat.
Economic Growth: By banning synthetic foods and limiting plant-based labels, Italy is missing out on a billion-dollar industry, job creation, and investment opportunities.
Cultural Evolution: Food culture evolves with societal changes. Terms like "vegan meat" help consumers make informed choices without threatening traditional cuisine.
Scientific Evidence: Research shows consumers aren’t confused by plant-based labels. Clear labeling is essential for transparency and choice.
Conclusion: Instead of bans, Italy should set standards for synthetic and plant-based foods, allowing innovation and tradition to coexist while promoting sustainability.

We need to learn from the Italians.
Italian Senate overwhelmingly passes a bill to ban cell-based/synthetic foods. Says these fake foods are more like pharmaceutical products and should be treated as such.

The idea that a human being can create foods that support life is interesting.
My science model offers a new approach to look at food not from the ideas of protein, carbohydrates, fats etc but from a quantum perspective.
How much quantum coherent water does your food contain?
How much entanglement has taken place to generate a coherent matrix that is life sustaining?
Natural foods have a complexity that is functional for supporting life.
Processing foods generates lifeless matter, which enhances shelf life but may be better for making objects than sustaining life.
