I am pleased to share as a co-author of the article by Bandarra-Taveres et al., describing a novel method for the dual production of human mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) and their derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) in a dissolvable microcarrier-based stirred culture system. This innovative approach, developed by Prof. Claudia L. da Silva's team at Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal, addresses a critical challenge in MSC-based therapy manufacturing – achieving efficient cell retrieval free of microcarriers. This not only ensures product safety and high viable MSC yields but also enables the simultaneous production of both MSCs and their therapeutic EVs, paving the way for a cost-effective large-scale production platform.
