Have you ever considered a career in public health but aren’t sure if your skills or education would translate? The Pathways to Public Health Fellowship has helped hundreds of Californians from varying sectors and education backgrounds change careers and enter public service through 13-month placements with local Public Health Departments. Here’s one of their stories. Vardan Shamamyan started his career as a tech and later as a compliance officer at a small retail pharmacy. There, he saw firsthand, many of the inequities and shortcomings of the healthcare system. These experiences and the COVID-19 pandemic led Vardan to conclude that the only way to impact change was at the public health level. Encouraged by his wife, who has a master’s degree in public health, he applied for and accepted a California Pathways Into Public Health (Pathways) Fellowship. "I truly feel like our work is going to make a difference in our community. The Pathways program is probably the best gateway you can walk through to a career in public health—and this is coming from someone who did not even have an undergraduate degree when I started. Get those applications in!" Vardan is currently working on a project to increase equitable access to hospital financial assistance programs. Data revealed that one in 10 adults in the Los Angeles area incurred medical debt, which can impact housing stability, food access, and more. Vardan and his team are designing a policy, application, and plain language summary that all hospitals in the area can use. A standardized process should make things easier for billing departments and patients seeking full or partial hospital debt forgiveness. "My LA County Public Health Office colleagues are passionate about positive change. There is no substitute for seeing firsthand how much work goes into every report and every program. I am so impressed by everyone I work with," said Vardan. Are you ready to make a difference in your community like Vardan? Join the public health field today. The deadline for the next Pathways Fellows program is April 5. Learn more about the fellowships and student internships available here: go.cdph.ca.gov/pathways. #PublicHealth #PublicHealthCareers #StateofCalifornia #HealthyCA4All #StateJobs #PublicHealthMatters

I help Gen Z navigate their careers 👏 | LinkedIn Top Voice 💙 | Ph.D. Student 📚 | Professionally Unprofessional, LLC | TEDx Speaker
“Ang, why did you decide to pursue a Ph.D. in education?” 🤔 Great question 👏 Roughly 1 in 10 Ph.D. graduates get a faculty position, but, we’re doing it anyway! Here’s why I decided to pursue a Ph.D. in education ⬇️ 1. Opportunity to explore an area of study deeply ➡️ I’ve been interested in exploring education equity, policy, and systems since I’ve been young. Pursuing a Ph.D. allows me to explore answers and responses to my enduring questions that I couldn’t answer any other way. 2. Space to research ➡️ I LOVE research and data. I love going in depth on topics I’m passionate about through qualitative studies, literature reviews, case interviews, etc. I believe in the power of elevating stories and lived experiences as data, and I want to contribute to that. 3. Career outcomes ➡️ While I certainly have goals of being a full-time faculty member in an education, organizational change, and/or leadership program, I’m also interested in a senior leadership role in student affairs, consulting, industry research, EdTech, etc. Pursuing my Ph.D. will help open doors for me. 4. Position & time in my life ➡️ I know several peers who are pursuing their Ph.D. part-time while they work full-time. I don’t want to go that route. I am grateful to have the means and footing to pursue my degree full-time before starting a family or planning for my and my partner’s futures. 5. Learning is meaningful to me ➡️ I consider myself an enduring learner, through and through. I appreciate the opportunity to LEARN as my full-time work. My program has so many opportunities for me to explore, engage with new ideas, and collaborate with fellow students. I’m so excited for it.

Stretching yourself outside of your comfort zone is never a bad thing. Shortly after being admitted to my masters program, I received a 10 hour-per-week graduate assistantship. I was overjoyed as it came with a stipend and a discounted tuition. About a week later, I got offered an even better assistantship working in the research lab. The stipend and discount were better, but there was a catch. I would be working 20 hours-per-week instead of 10. I admittedly was nervous, but didn't let that stop me from accepting the position. After about a week or two into the program, I began hearing stories from the second year students about a former classmate who ended up dropping out of the program because he couldn't handle the school work on top of the assistantship. I started second guessing my own ability to handle the work load. I decided the worst-case scenario would be for me to drop the assistantship but remain in the program. I would give it a semester to see how well I could handle it all. That experience definitely stretched me beyond what I was expecting, but it really set the stage for how to handle competing priorities; something all too common when working in the real world. Not only was I able to handle the workload, but I eventually began signing up for extra curriculars on top of my typical duties working the lab. I created and presented 4 tutorials on using #rstats and 1 tutorial using #qualtrics to students and faculty. The real kicker is that I was successful in my first job out of school because of my experience using #rstats in the research lab. #data #datascience #datacareers #careeradvice #career

Actively seeking SDE roles (2025) | FullStack Software Developer | MCS student at ASU | 4 YOE | Formerly at HERE & Siemens | Published Author
As the Director of Campus Engagement in GPSA, I often encounter common inquiries from incoming students at ASU. Here, I aim to provide comprehensive responses that may help my fellow students navigate their academic journey and involvement within the university community. 🔍 What is GPSA? GPSA stands for Graduate and Professional Student Association, a dynamic organization committed to enhancing the graduate student experience at ASU through advocacy, programming, and support. 🤔 How did I know about GPSA? I happen to come across GPSA by exploring ASU's vibrant student community on Instagram. GPSA's impact on the graduate student body intrigued me, and I knew I wanted to be a part of it. A story was put up, and there was a link to apply for this position. 📅 When did I apply for this position? I applied for this position during the application period last semester, around June. 💰 Is it paid? Yes, this position is paid in the form of a stipend and it is deducted from your semester fees. 🗣️ Was there any interview? Yes, after resume screening, there was an interview process where I had the opportunity to discuss my qualifications, experiences, and vision for enhancing campus engagement among graduate students. 🤝 How is the hiring done? The hiring process involved applying, followed by a thorough review of qualifications and interviews with selected candidates. It was a rigorous process to ensure the best fit for the role. 🎓 Can anyone apply to this position? Absolutely! GPSA encourages all graduate and professional students at ASU to consider applying for various leadership positions within the organization. It's a fantastic way to get involved and make a difference on campus. ⏰ Can we work 20 hours along with this position? Since this is not an hourly job, students can still work 20 hours on campus. However, this position requires around 12-15 hours of dedication. 📝 What work do I do as a Director? As the Director of Campus Engagement, my role involves spearheading initiatives to foster a sense of community among graduate students, organizing events, and collaborating with campus partners to address students' needs and concerns. If any of you have any further questions or ideas, feel free to reach out—I'd love to connect! #ASU #GPSA #CampusEngagement #GradLife #StudentLeadership

Is graduate school stressful?😂😂😪 I’ve been getting a lot of questions lately about what life is like as a graduate student, so here’s my personal experience. In my first month, I thought the stress would be temporary since I was just settling in. Little did I know, this ride will last the next five years! 😂😩 As a teaching and research assistant, my days are packed with running lab sessions for undergrads, working on my research, and taking courses. Even weekends, you’ll often find me in the lab running experiments or catching up on assignments. At first, I thought it was just me struggling to keep up, but after talking to my peers (at my school and others), I realized we're all in the same boat😪😂😂. The demands can make it challenging to stay connected with family and friends, not because we don’t care, but because the stress is real and relentless😩. Here’s the thing: if your motivation for graduate school is financial rewards or the allure of travel, you might want to reconsider. You need to be genuinely passionate about your personal and professional growth, and truly committed to the goals you’re chasing. The interesting part is, you get the chance to delve deep into your area of interest, expanding your knowledge, solving problems, and seeing your hard work pay off when you finally get interesting results. I’m still figuring out the best way to balance it all, despite my well-planned schedules😂😂. For those who’ve been down this road, I’d love to hear your experiences and any tips you have to offer!😂♥️♥️💫 #GradSchoolLife #PhD

Why You Should Care If Your Professor Is An Industry Professional!! 🤔🎓 Many Globally recognised universities are now bridging the gap between traditional teaching and industry knowledge, by bringing industry professionals into academia. Having an industry professional involved in your education can enhance your curriculum and help you better understand the link between theory and practice. Industry professionals bring real-world experience into the classroom, providing fresh insights that can be difficult to come across. They can adapt course content and give it a personal touch, aiming for a more “real-life” scenario. This helps students anticipate and prepare for real-life challenges they will face in their professional careers. Even as the UGC has issued the guidelines for the PoP scheme, "there is no common platform where experts can register themselves and universities can identify them. Therefore, to fill up this gap, the UGC has designed this Professor of Practice portal,Industry experts with proven expertise of at least 15 years will be eligible for the Professor of Practice posts. No formal academic qualification will be taken into consideration if the candidate has exemplary professional practice." Your university professors not only know your learning style and who you are as a student, but they’re also likely to have a lot of contacts within the industry. Depending on your aspirations and future plans, they may even be able to put you in contact with the right people and be the golden ticket to helping you get a foot on the career ladder. Having a real understanding of the industry before graduating can be a real deal-breaker for some employers. Combining experience with theory means the lectures and academic programs given to students are very useful and equip them with the skills and solid knowledge they need to continue to grow and become more attractive to companies. So, it’s important to consider if your professor is an industry professional and how it can benefit you in the long run. #IndustryKnowledge #RealWorldExperience #Education #CareerDevelopment #hospitalmanagement #administrationjobs #healthcareadministration
