Australia and New Zealand Unite for UK Wine Trade Tastings in 2025 🍇 📅 In an exciting development for the wine industry, Wine Australia and New Zealand Winegrowers are joining forces to host their annual UK trade tastings in 2025. Scheduled for 30 January in London at Lindley Hall, The Royal Horticultural Halls, and 4 February in Edinburgh at The Balmoral, these events will bring together wineries, importers, trade, and media from across the UK and Europe. 🌍 This collaboration marks a significant milestone, as it’s the first time both national associations have come together for the UK trade tastings. Building on the success of the Australia and New Zealand masterclass in Manchester in June 2024 and tastings in Copenhagen and Stockholm in October 2023, the combined event promises to showcase the unique synergy and complementary qualities of wines from both countries. Mark Stephenson of Grape and Grain lauded the initiative, noting the benefits for trade professionals juggling busy schedules. 🍷 The UK market remains pivotal for both Australian and New Zealand wines. Laura Jewell MW from Wine Australia highlighted the camaraderie and shared attributes between the two countries, from fine wine and great food to stunning scenery and a laid-back attitude. Chris Stroud of New Zealand Winegrowers emphasised the efficiency and expanded portfolio opportunities this joint event offers to buyers, retailers, and sommeliers. Good point Alison! With so many wineries and brands in total ‘survival mode’, I think it’s real easy to start chasing alternative routes to a P&L. Your point about the restaurants is potentially a great key, especially if wineries had greater access to collaboration with local restaurants. With 170,000+ new brand registrations in the last year, 80,000+ of them imported product, staying in business seems to be overshadowing the focus of being a great hospitality brand. I believe in creating experiential winery events highlighting the miraculous details of wine as the key to great hospitality eventing. A little food ‘to go with it’ is an accent or enhancement to the focus, not a focus of the brand.🛟🍷 #directtoconsumer #dtc #winemakersforum #wine #winery

Here is some exciting information on On-Premise wine data by Country of Origin from nearly 50,000 accounts surveyed: 1. Unsurprisingly, American wine is the most represented country in American Restaurants. France is #3 by number of accounts, and Italy is #2 in more than 27% more accounts than France! 2. France is #2 by the total number of placements on the wine lists in America, beating Italy at #3 by over 16%! 3. American wines are only out-placed in two markets in the U.S.; France is the #1 most-placed country on wine lists in New York and D.C.!

Part II of Wine Lister’s 2024 Bordeaux study, titled “How’s the patient?”, has now been published. Of these, 10 were from Margaux - Our price analysis indicates that the 2023s should be priced between -21% and -34% below 2022 on average. To date, the key releases are down by an average of 22% - Bordeaux still dominates searches and offers on Wine-Searcher, though search count for all leading Bordeaux appellations has declined and the number of offers of Bordeaux wines is up - Petrus and Les Carmes Haut-Brion progressed the most in terms of online search rank over the past year, while Le Clarence de Haut-Brion and Bélair-Monange saw the largest increase in volumes traded at auction Click here: https://lnkd.in/g4D3FEX

Up levelling my knowledge! I have always loved learning new things, especially when I get to choose what I learn rather than a course selected for me by a manager or to be compliant to a regulatory body. Today I am booking my next level course , my WSET level 2 to enhance my knowledge of wines. I have always been interested in winemaking and the different varieties of grapes and how you can create a wine you love by blending different grapes. In 2005 I gave up my corporate job for a year to go travelling and during those travels I went on a number of wine tours. I did these tours in the US, Mexico, Chile, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa, my only regret was that I did not get in Mendoza which was a big oversight on my behalf as my trip saw me in Argentina three times. During the pandemic I supported my local winery by visiting when I could, buying their wines and joining their wine club. If any of you are in Gloucestershire Woodchester Valley Vineyard is well worth a visit they have an absolutely beautiful tasting room. I never know when I start a course where it will take me, it was my Health Coaching Course that started my coaching business but I did not have this in mind when I took the course I did it because I was interested in health. Let's see where my newly formed wine knowledge takes me, all I know if I want to do level 3 I have to be working in the wine industry. BORDEAUX PRICES WILL HAVE TO GO DOWN. BORDEAUX PRICES WILL HAVE TO GO UP. Over the next few weeks, there will be lots of earnest discussion about how far 2024 Bordeaux prices should fall en primeur - and the distance prices of bottled top wines have already dropped on Liv-Ex. Chateau Petrus 2020 is apparently worth 30% less than it was a year ago... If this continues you might soon be able to get a bottle for under €3,000. Few if any of the people having this kind of discussion will give much thought to the *other* Bordeaux - the torrent of basic wine selling in bulk for less than €0.75 per bottle - prices that compete with Coca Cola and Red Bull. In other words, a single bottle of top Pomerol commands a price that is over 2,000 times higher than one sold in the same shape and size of bottle, bearing the name of a chateau on its label and made from grapes grown in vineyards a few kilometres away. It is easy to forget that there's more than one kind of Bordeaux

Are wine trade fairs still worth the hype? I left Düsseldorf & Prowein last week with mixed feelings. My pros: + it’s a good opportunity to meet my customers. + it’s a great way to connect & catch up with people from the wine industry worldwide +be updated on the Latest trends: guess what, almost an entirely hall was devoted to zero alcohol wines & spirits ! My cons: -Expensive accommodation -Huge lines outside the show waiting for a cab or an Uber -strikes and canceled flights (second year in a row), with a lot of people trying to figure out how to get home… - How come that the 3 main wine trade shows in Europe are only few weeks apart (Wine Paris, Prowein and Vinitaly) ?! This goes at the cost of the wine industry and of wine makers in particular. Are they still the right place to make new customers? I doubt it and I think that there’s need for a change and for news ideas for the wine industry. Have you been to any trade show lately?
