It's not an easy read, but it's an important one. Publishing the AoC Mental Health Report 2024 today is a purposeful reminder of the mental health crisis impacting further education. It is time for colleges to be directly and sustainably funded, and for FE students to benefit from emerging national policy addressing mental health in education. As a minimum, all colleges should be included in LA suicide prevention strategies - we hope this report supports and informs conversations locally to enable this. Nationally, we support a cross-government partnership, bringing health and education strategies together, to ensure policies and initiatives to improve mental health support in education reaches every student. One life lost is too many. I am humbled by the incredible (yet still unfunded) work delivered by colleges and take this opportunity to say a huge THANK YOU to every leader and practitioner for acknowledging mental health as a strategic priority. I also note that this work comes at a cost, recognising the impossible pressures on college budgets and staff wellbeing - this is not sustainable, but I truly believe we have an opportunity for change. I hope this year under a new government we will see inclusive and funded policies that truly make a positive difference for our FE community.
