Q. What has caused at least 13 derailments on 4 railroads and been identified as a challenge on at least 7 railroads? A. Broken spikes (leading to wide gage) in timber crosstie elastic fastening systems.
Q. What has caused at least 13 derailments on 4 railroads and been identified as a challenge on at least 7 railroads? A. Broken spikes (leading to wide gage) in timber crosstie elastic fastening systems. Thanks to Tom Roadcap, PE for his awesome work back in 2018 and 2019 to survey the industry, visit field sites, and start a multi-year project in which RailTEC at Illinois has aimed to quantify the magnitude and cause of broken spikes as well as identify mitigation methods to eliminate them. Thanks to Brad Kerchof for championing this work when we were getting started and the Federal Railroad Administration for funding this work and publishing the Phase 1 Report (see link below). https://lnkd.in/g_ynDx89 Thanks to Norfolk Southern, BNSF Railway, CSX, and Union Pacific Railroad as well as CN, Lewis Bolt and Nut Company , Vossloh Fastening Systems, Getzner - engineering a quiet future, Pliteq, and Progress Rail, A Caterpillar Company for their continued support. Also, thanks to J. Riley Edwards, Ph.D, P.E., Arthur Lima, Matheus Trizotto, Rahat Mahmud Khan, Josh(Jaeyoon) Kim, and all the others who have continued to help investigate this challenge - More to come in the future! Note: the map only indicates 11 derailments because there have been multiple broken-spike-caused derailments since it was submitted for review. #research #

Higher demand for more traffic, speed, and weight on existing railway tracks requires innovative solutions. The Federal Railroad Administration of the US and Amtrak held a long-term study to determine a way to create a long-lasting rail structure while reducing the construction times & costs... The result: The PRS-Neoloy System's Engineering & Tough Cell Solution allows us to accomplish this goal. The studies conclude: – 20-60% construction cost reduction – 30-70% less construction time – 685% longer maintenance cycles Comment if you are a Rail Engineer #railways #engineering #infrastructure #geotechnicalengineering

We just successfully completed a challenging project, described below, while reaching over 1,000 days without a loss time incident. Reaching 1000 days of construction without a lost time incident is a significant milestone. It reflects a strong commitment to safety, rigorous adherence to protocols, and effective communication among the team. This achievement is a testament to the culture of safety that has been cultivated, where every worker understands their role in maintaining a safe environment. It’s a point of pride and a benchmark that sets the standard for future projects. However, it’s important to remember that safety is an ongoing process, and continuous efforts are needed to maintain this record. There were many challenges during the construction of a 7.7-mile transmission line, and the most notable was the Sullivan Sq. track crossing, which required the design and construction of two 45-foot-deep pits for tunnelling under railroad tracks. These pits were designed to house the tunnel boring machine capable of boring, in bedrock, twin 300’ long tunnels underneath seven railroad tracks owned and operated by the MBTA, Keolis, and Pan Am. The pits were constructed on either side of the railroad tracks and between the Elevated Expressway, Mystic Ave. Bridge, Maffa Way Bridge.

#Agility - why does this matter on rolling stock engineering projects? The Rail Confidence team can quickly address rolling stock needs as they occur through the intentional autonomy of our senior team, which means decisions don't get stuck in red tape. An exclusive focus on rail also means we don't dilute our expertise across other applications. We concentrate solely on rolling stock engineering and within it, the quality of our advice and efficiency of turnaround. #railengineering #rollingstock #railindustry #engineering #railsafety
