How dexamethasone protects against severe COVID-19 Dexamethasone was used as an effective drug for severe COVID cases during the pandemic. A study integrating single-cell and bulk transcriptomics in clinical cohorts reveals the molecular basis of its immunomodulatory effect. The authors show that the dexamethasone-induced transcriptional changes were confined to a specific monocyte state and were directly linked to clinical outcome.
