With a UK election looming and the economy at a crossroads, the need to promote business and enterprise has never been greater.  Business creates jobs, drives innovation, supports education and training, and generates revenue and taxes - it is a lever for growth and equality. The diversity of UK business, from shops and start-ups to manufacturers and multinationals, is part of its success. We need a unifying, representative voice so that business can get on with its job. 𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐈𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐒 (3) 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘢𝘹𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘴 Researchers have come up with a strong link between progressive taxation - a tax rate that increases as the taxable amount increases - and people’s assessment of how happy they are. Progressive taxation leads to happiness via public and common goods such as health care, education, and public transportation, the taxation helps to fund. And ultimately, you guessed it, trust. People trust that money will be used and distributed wisely. Again, in more equal societies, people trust each other more. And social trust contributes to the building of better institutions. The weather doesn't have much influence on your overall happiness. The warmest annual average temperature in southwestern Finland is 6.5 °C. And from there, eastward and northward, the average temperature only decreases. Nordic winters are indeed long, dark, and cold, and most of us associate warmer temperatures and bright sunny days with happiness. However, findings suggest the effect on the happiness score is quite insignificant. People adapt to the weather, meaning heavy rain, snowstorms, and sub-zero temperatures do not typically affect the life satisfaction of those who are used to living under those circumstances. So, what can we do to be happy like the Nordics? However, there are some things you can do. People are much, much happier if they feel they're in an environment where people are going to watch their back. And it's really important to tell people how generous other people are. The trust we place in others is higher than what we take it to be. Lacking this trust makes us unhappy. Or at least, not as happy as the Nordics.

“Charting our future growth and celebrating internal promotions” Prime Minister Lawrence Wong delivered his maiden National Day Rally (“NDR”) last Sunday. It was a rousing speech which seeks to connect with all Singaporeans at all levels encouraging all of us to chase our rainbow and to redefine the definition of success at our own terms. There was also clear message being sent that the government is willing to revisit and rethink many policies and will not be unafraid to make radical policy changes in order to support Singaporeans. Policies like ➡ the provision of financial support for the involuntarily unemployed ➡ the provision of up to 30 weeks of share parental leave and ➡changes to the gifted education program These are all bold moves which will help set Singapore on a stronger footing going forward. My key takeaway from the NDR was how Singapore can never afford to stay still. As PM Wong highlighted, “Powerful forces – over which we have no control – are changing our environment.” Increased Geopolitical uncertainty will likely be par for the norm in the coming years. With this backdrop it is heartening to see how the government have laid out clear plans to allow Singapore to continue to grow and thrive with the redevelopment of the Kallang Alive Master plan, East Coast Long-island, Marina Bay area as well as the Southern Waterfront. These plans will need decades to come to fruition, but it is essential to make Singapore a better place for generations to come. This reminded me also of what we do in our firm where we have set big bold goals to double our headcount and to double our Deloitte Southeast Asia revenue in the coming years. To this, we were treated to a lavish meal at Jiak Kim House last week where we celebrated the promotion of one of the Directors in our team Angelia Zhang to Partner 🚀.   Promotion to partnership is a significant milestone as partners are also part owners of the business as everyone work hand in hand to grow the business to the next level so that everyone in the organization can benefit. Fundamental to promotions is also continued growth of the firm. As we continue to grow our business helping to shape the story of Singapore and Southeast Asia, internal promotions continue to be an essential part of our firm’s talent retention strategy in order to ensure future renewal of leadership and commitment to the people in our firm. Congratulations to you again Angelia Zhang and look forward to working with you together with our leaders to drive our department and firm to greater heights. Our latest report examines how the UK corporate landscape has evolved over the last fifteen years, with notable shifts in the dynamics of private capital and listed companies.
