While these systems recapitulate key properties of the #BBB, they come with limitations in terms of scale, ease of use and analysis. If L-glutamine is not added to the cell culture media, several adverse effects can occur: 1.Reduced Cell Growth and Viability: Cells may exhibit significantly slower growth rates or fail to proliferate effectively due to insufficient energy and building blocks for macromolecule synthesis. 2.Metabolic Stress: Lack of L-glutamine can lead to metabolic stress, as cells struggle to meet their energy and biosynthetic demands, potentially leading to cell death or apoptosis. 3.Altered Cellular Functions: Essential cellular functions dependent on proteins and nucleotides might be impaired, affecting cell signaling, maintenance, and overall functionality. 4.Unstable pH: The culture medium's pH may become less stable, potentially creating an inhospitable environment for cell growth and survival. In summary, L-glutamine is indispensable in mammalian cell culture media for maintaining cellular energy, growth, viability, and proper metabolic functions.
