Orange Shirt Day also called National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, is a day to raise awareness of the individual, family and community inter-generational impacts of residential schools on Indigenous Peoples, and to foster that Every Child Matters. The orange shirt represents the loss of culture, freedom and self-esteem that Indigenous peoples have suffered for generations, and still do today. At MCRC, we are committed to our journey in reconciliation. Towards ReconciliACTION, we are incorporating Indigenous teachings into our learning opportunities, recognizing Indigenous culture within our classrooms, and honoring Indigenous philosophies within our organization. This year, our programs delved into the 7 Grandfather Teachings as we strive to deepen our understanding of virtues like wisdom, love, respect, bravery, honesty, humility, and truth. Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation September 30 is Orange Shirt Day and is federally recognized as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It is a legacy of the Saint Joseph Mission Residential School (1891-1981). Started in May of 2013, this project has grown nationwide and expanded to commemorate the residential school experience, to witness and honour the healing journey of residential school Survivors and their families, and to commit to the ongoing process of reconciliation. Students in schools across WSD are recognizing Indigenous culture and remembering residential school Survivors during the week leading up to September 30, 2023. While it can be a difficult process to remember a darker time in Canadian history, learning about that past can help build identity and meaning for students today. Indigenous students acquire a positive self-identity through learning their own histories, cultures and contemporary lifestyles. Non-Indigenous students develop an understanding and respect for the histories, cultures, and contemporary lifestyles of Indigenous peoples. For our first blog of the new year, we have an insightful article which delves into how Oasis Community Learning is committed to nurturing active citizens who make a positive impact in their communities. Our Curriculum Leader & National Lead Practitioner for PD, Ruth Brown, and our National Lead Practitioner for PSHE/PD in Primary, Sonia Goddard, provide a deeper understanding of how our curriculum, rooted in the Oasis Ethos and 9 Habits, empowers students to develop essential skills, challenge discrimination, and champion inclusivity. From understanding British Values to standing up against bullying, our students are equipped to be upstanders and use their voices for positive change. For decades Corio has been a Labor-voting electorate - both State and Federal. It is to the great shame of both levels of government and the local representatives from the ALP and the LNP that Corio and Norlane have missed out on investments that would and should build the much-deserving community. It’s deemed to be too safe an electorate to be fussed with spending money when less secure seats need ‘attention’. Northern Futures had a 78% success rate in getting participants into work in 2022 - an astounding achievement that other employment programs would give their eye teeth for. Yet Corio and Norlane are Victoria’s most disadvantaged suburb and no-one is putting their hands in the taxpayers’ pockets to fund Northern Futures next year and into the future. Richard Marles - as Deputy Prime Minister - and Ella George, Lara MP - please do something to fix this! It is YOUR electorate and these are YOUR constituents.
As a board member of Geelong’s highly successful Northern Futures, I am deeply concerned about our ability to continue to provide important pre-employment training to the most disadvantaged community in the state - please see our media release for information.

#Juneteenth commemorates the anniversary of June 19, 1865 – when the news of freedom arrived in Texas and reached the last remaining enslaved individuals. Today is a day of celebration, marking the end of chattel slavery in the United States and the freedom of future generations. Today is also a reminder that there is so much more to be done in the name of justice and equality. At MN8 Energy, we know that diverse perspectives drive innovation and propel us towards a brighter, more sustainable future. Our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion starts in the workplace and extends into the communities we serve and beyond, as we work to create a more inclusive and equitable tomorrow.’ If you’re looking for an avenue to support change in your community, we suggest working with organizations like Black Girls Code, Thurgood Marshall College Fund, Harlem Grown,The Carrie Meek Foundation and the South Florida People of Color, all of which are catalysts for progress for their local communities. As we celebrate Juneteenth, let us renew our commitment to building a future where energy equity is a reality for every individual, regardless of background or circumstance.
