This is why we do what we do at OCE. It gives people an opportunity to show how they’ve changed, what they’ve learned, what they are capable of, and how they can add value to a company willing to give them the chance to prove themselves. Bravo to the businesses and community partners who, instead of turning their back on them or listening to those who have nothing positive to say, met them where they are and let them speak for themselves. People can change.
95% of currently incarcerated individuals will someday return to the community. This is a significant factor contributing to the types of training programs that OCE operates, which lead directly to employment opportunities. The spotlight on inclusion and equity has emphasized the need for those reentering to have a quality start to their new life. Recently, OCE helped coordinate a successful job fair at Oregon State Penitentiary with 12 employers and over 100 adults in custody (AICs). The event showcased the people in our programs and the community businesses in need of skilled individuals. One business owner commented, "It was one of the best outreach events I have attended. As the primary outreach coordinator for our organization, I have attended many. I would give this a ten out of ten. Those who came to my table were engaged in what I said and had much to say and share themselves. I was impressed by the resumes and photos backing their explanations of the programs at the facility." Raising Awareness and Funds This year, on our charity golf day, we raised funds for the orthopaedic unit in Southampton while raising awareness of conditions like talipes (club foot). We involve clients and contractors, fostering a strong sense of community. Charitable Donations We support causes that matter to our clients and contractors through donations and sponsorships, giving back to the communities that support us. The jobless rate in the CareerSource Citrus Levy Marion region was 4.4% in January 2024, half a percent higher than the previous month and 0.7 percentage point greater than the area’s year ago rate. The labor force was 219,806, up 4,070 for a 1.9% increase over the year. [...] Rusty Skinner, CEO of CareerSource CLM, noted that because January statistics are a “recalibration” of data associated with labor statistics, it is “most accurate” to benchmark the start of the calendar year, comparing year-over-year numbers. “When approached in this manner, we see a continued growth in our labor force,” he said. “The continued expansion of job seekers is a positive sign in a labor market that is light on job seekers.” Skinner pointed out that CareerSource CLM joins with community and education partners to hold job fairs, most recently for businesses hiring CDL drivers, youth/young adults, and mature workers. He added that more job fairs in the pipeline and that CareerSource CLM also holds myriad hiring events for employers throughout the region and will once again offer broadband network training for interested residents in Levy County. Law students, The government offices may or may not come to OCI's. Many will not. Yet many of you would love to work for a government agency. In my experience, many legal jobs are hidden. So, if you can pull back the curtain and discover where those jobs exist, you are ahead of the game. This District Attorney job fair is well worth your time if you can make it up to the DC area - link below. In my experience, public defender jobs, district attorney jobs, city attorney jobs, and county attorney jobs are 100% overlooked. Unlike in 1998, when I graduated, these groups are having difficulty finding qualified people. On top of that, many are seeing experienced, long-time people retire. These jobs are not for everyone. Your law school rank will be looked at (maybe) for a second, as will where you went to law school. What they will look at is your desire to do the job, proven interest in the type of work, whether you are likable, whether you are someone who will work the mountain of unending work, do you have a good sense of humor (gallows humor prevails), and are you teachable. These jobs are fun. They give you transferable skills. You will handle your own cases. You will get free training opportunities. You will meet hundreds of lawyers. You will get to interact with judges. #lawstudents
