Will general-purpose robots be the biggest breakthrough in hardware? Well, they certainly can, but it depends... For over 50 years, progress has been slow. Single-purpose robots have supported physical labor, with popular devices like the Roomba becoming common in homes. Despite impressive demos, industrial and consumer robotics have grown linearly, facing challenges in various environments. Current robots lack generalizable learning and still lag behind humans in basic capabilities. However, it’s changing rapidly. Currently, there are 20+ companies, (maybe more) with over $4 billion in funding, working on revolutionizing this industry. Declining hardware costs and advancements in AI are creating big opportunities for them. Rather than seeing massive adoption, we'll probably see gradual improvements as it needs infrastructure development as well. Nevertheless, I think they have all the chances to be one of the major technological breakthroughs of our time. Exciting times ahead! #generalpurposerobots #robotics #breakthroughs #hardware

#HumanoidRobots have been a hot topic, and 𝐓𝐞𝐬𝐥𝐚 𝐁𝐨𝐭 (𝐎𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐮𝐬) 𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝟐𝟐 𝐝𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐨𝐦 compared to the previous 11 DoF. Tesla's goal of having robots in people's homes at a price point of 💸💸💸 $20,000 - $30,000 is quite ambitious! But focusing on designing a robot that can interact with all the objects in a human household to do chores, caregiver, and generally assist is why they need such complex hands! The biggest question, as always, is how to make these robots collaborative and safe to be in homes? We had some great discussions last week at the 𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐌𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞. 🤖 Can Robots Ever Surpass Human Abilities? As AI and robotics advance, we often wonder: Could there come a time when we become overly dependent on robots? While the future holds promise, the reality today is quite different. Take Optimus, Tesla's general-purpose humanoid robot, which was featured at the "We, Robot" event on October 10th, 2024. Tesla plans for Optimus to enter limited production by 2025, with over 1,000 units to be used in Tesla facilities. What’s more, by 2026, Optimus may be available to other companies, priced at around $30,000. Though its demonstration showed potential, Optimus still relied on human supervision—a reminder that full autonomy in robotics is a work in progress. Tesla’s focus on self-reliantly building a vertically integrated robotics supply chain is setting the stage for the future of robotics, but we’re not there yet. The question still remains: Will robots ever fully replace human capabilities?
