Some thoughts on the transition from SWE to technical founder: As someone who learns best by doing, working on a greenfield opportunity has taught me more about engineering and management than working on incremental improvements in an established system or business. That being said, having solid foundations and learning best practices is crucial for making informed decisions. Cross-functional communication is critical: I primarily worked with other engineers or product managers as a software engineer. These days, I interface with operations, sales, and marketing as much as I do with product and engineering. It's important to figure out what's important to each function and communicate with each teammate at the right level of detail. YMMV as the team composition at every startup is different, depending on the stage and how technical the product is. You have to be willing to do more than just the technical stuff. Early-stage startups are notoriously under-resourced and Skye is no exception - at times it feels as if I moonlight as an engineer in addition to tackling customer success, hiring, strategy, and user interviews. I embrace the opportunity to wear many hats but understand this is not for everyone. Follow or reach out for more insights or to learn more about what we're building at Skye!

Entering my 24th (!) year of doing startups. In retrospect, it isn't the career path of least resistance. But holy hell is it rewarding. If you love: - creating tight relationships with your co-workers - solving real world problems - having an owner mindset instead of an employee mindset - being around like-minded builders ...do yourself a favor and join a startup. Regardless of the outcome, you'll come out on the other side with invaluable lessons learned.
