Yesterday was #socialmobilityday and I loved reading all the stories of talented professionals who are #stateschoolproud. We have the HR tools to identify those with the potential to do a role well, yet some people are still ignored due to bias 🤦🏼. Sometimes unconscious. Sometimes not 🤷♀️. Who’d have thought the scruffy little girl in this photo (with her much missed brother and Nan) would have travelled overseas to purchase menswear for one of the poshest stores in London? Thankfully we had profiling tools 30+ years ago when I left my state school and was looking for permanent work. And they helped me land my first permanent job. I remember my first interview though. I could almost feel the disdain from my interviewer (from a fashion department in a store in London) who kept banging on about my Saturday job in my local greengrocers (which I had started when I was just 13 years old). She clearly wasn’t impressed. I suspect my accent wasn’t quite what she was looking for either, as I was living on a council estate. I had also failed my A-levels, as my brother had passed away from Cystic Fibrosis that year. On paper I was not ticking many boxes for her. Yet I knew I would be great at the role. I loved fashion and I was a hard worker and customers loved me. And I was good with numbers. I never got passed the first interview. Yet a week later I had 2 assessment days with Harrods and also Jaeger. So ‘posh’ stores. #personalityprofiling, #aptitudetests, a competency based interview, a role play and group exercise. I was initially terrified, but ended up loving the experiences. And I was offered a trainee manager job at BOTH companies 👏. I decided on Harrods and at 24 yrs old I was buying men’s accessories for them ❤️. Companies of course should use the tools to help them identify the right candidates. As Talent is talent. It comes from many different backgrounds. My job at Thomas, is to encourage companies to use unbiased talent tools for recruiting and getting the best out of ALL of their employees, which of course help people like me, get the opportunities they deserve ❤️. And the companies who use them of course get to recruit and retain those who are likely to succeed ❤️. There's beauty in a #diverse career journey ✨ If you look at my career journey, it's non linear, and doesn't follow what society has always told me is 'conventional', although... I'm not someone that follows the norm anyway... 😉 Whilst I've worked in sales in varying capacities for 19 years, I've worked in... ⭐️ Different industries - Retail, Beauty, Automotive, Hospitality, Events, Staffing. ⭐️ Different roles in varying departments - Sales, Admin, 360 Recruitment, Talent Acquisition, HR, Operations, Events, Marketing. ⭐️ Different sized companies, even co-founding a business that has gone on to be incredibly successful. Those layering of skill sets, successes and different experiences I've had I believe contribute significantly to the success I have today. I've been able to bring... 💥 Diverse viewpoints 💥 Diverse perspectives 💥 Diverse skillsets that can raise industry standards, fuelling #innovation and #creativity. So before you DON'T apply to that role because you think your experience doesn't match all of the requirements... take time to recognise your high transferrable skills, and the level of value you could bring to that organisation because of that.
