It's a mandatory contribution of 2.5% of a Muslim's accumulated wealth, which should be donated to the poor and needy. The proceeds are distributed to eight eligible groups, including the poor, the needy, debt-ridden individuals, and those traveling with few resources. The Pareto principle in fundraising fascinates me. In many cases roughly 80% of income will come from 20% of donors. If your charity is confident that you know what you are doing and have a strong case for support, it helps to keep the faith and trust the process. The principle holds true for Ssembwa Orphanage Care Uganda. The children were thrilled yesterday to take delivery of a water tank thanks to a £830 contribution from a donor. This will enable them to drink fresh water and eradicate typhoid and dysentry which is currently rife. If your charity is falling short of fundraising targets. Ummazing 3.0 is right around the corner and with it some big things are being launched... The biggest is a Ramadan Race which has two elements attached: 1. A Real-Time Leaderboard - Where businesses can compete with one another to rank #1 in their respective category. There are 5 main ways businesses can gain points (these are laid out below). 2. Charity Component - Where a business can set a pledge and set an amount each upvote is worth and the business gives that in Sadaqah during this blessed month. Say a business pledges to donate £1,500 and they set each upvote to £1.50. If a business now gets 150 upvotes, the business will donate £225. Who's excited for the Ramadan Race? Because we sure are!

Causes require solutions, not band aids. 🩹 I spent 5 years of my life in Cambodia. In 2013, I was struck by the fact that, despite one in 25 people needing it, there was not one single Cambodian speech therapist in country. But recognising a problem requires an appropriate solution. And well-meaning foreigners had been flying in and out of Cambodia for decades, either training local people or providing services. We needed to build Cambodia's solution to the problem. And that's why we created OIC Cambodia, a charity with a clear exit strategy to shut down in 2030. This meant the charity focused more on the solution than perpetuating itself or our own egos. Meanwhile, I handed off leadership to a Cambodian led team in 2017 and moved back to Australia. Because it's not up to us - well meaning foreigners - to tell Cambodian people how to solve their own problems. I've since written about this model in my book Redundant Charities. But there are still 7 more years for this charity to complete its work for the over half a million people who need speech therapy in Cambodia.
