#NASWWIAC Workshop Spotlight: Veterinary Social Work at Wiscares Community Veterinary Clinic: Providing Care for Low-Income and Homeless Pet Owners, Veterinary Clinic Staff, and Veterinary Students Presented by: Jennifer Wheeler Brooks, PhD, CISW (she/her), Liddy Alvarez, DVM, DABVP (Canine and Feline Practice) (she/her), and Ruthanne Chun, DVM, DACVIM (Oncology) (she/her) Wednesday, October 23rd, 2024, 9:00-10:15 a.m. 1.25 CEHs Wisconsin Companion Animal Resources, Education, and Social Services (WisCARES) is an interdisciplinary program that aims to increase access to veterinary services for low-income and homeless pet owners, provide social services to the same clientele, and offer a unique learning environment for UW students. Veterinary social work in this setting involves three distinct client groups: clinic clients, clinic staff, and veterinary students. Attendees will learn about interventions for each group and have the opportunity to participate in a reflective writing and debriefing exercise. In the WisCARES curriculum, these are designed to encourage veterinary students to think, write, and talk about moral stress and healthy coping strategies. https://lnkd.in/gqYSHEMh #NASWWI #NASWWI50 #Wisconsin #Health #SocialWork

Personally, I’m very proud to have even a small part in helping Angie Arora bring awareness to the ways veterinary professionals can identify and address trauma in the workplace. This certainly isn’t a light subject, but we couldn’t imagine a better person to address it. Her expertise is invaluable, and we believe that learning how to manage trauma exposure in the workplace is key to supporting long-term wellbeing in the veterinary field. At CoVet, we are deeply committed to improving the well-being of veterinary professionals. It’s central to our mission, and we’re honored to support this important conversation. Here’s a preview of what Angie will cover during the session, so you can get a sense of what to expect. Description Veterinary medicine is a profession uniquely exposed to high levels of stress and trauma, often far exceeding that of other workplaces. While some stressors are unavoidable, others can be managed with appropriate strategies. Although veterinary professionals are trained in addressing trauma related to animal care, many are not prepared to recognize and support human trauma experienced by clients and colleagues due to a lack of awareness and training in this area. This gap can lead to unresolved trauma, which negatively impacts professional well-being, team dynamics, and the quality of care provided to patients and clients. In this session, we will explore the various forms of human trauma encountered in veterinary medicine and their impacts. Attendees will gain insights into effective strategies for individuals, teams, and practices to begin the process of healing and enhancing their capacity for recovery from trauma exposure. Learning Objectives - Define stress and trauma, including common examples in veterinary medicine. - Identify ways stress and trauma impact individuals, teams and hospitals. - Explain the importance of nervous system health as a way of managing exposure to stress and trauma. - Identify ways to embed debriefing into veterinary hospitals as a way of managing exposure to stress and trauma. - Identify principles of trauma-informed workplaces RSVP: https://lnkd.in/giiHNbwf

🩺Veterinarians—If your state did not have a veterinary school, how did you prepare for admission to an out-of-state school? Though more vet schools are proposed to be built, there are currently only 32 colleges of veterinary medicine in the United States, making out-of-state acceptance rates extremely competitive. There is no college/school of veterinary medicine in the state of Connecticut to obtain a D.V.M., only undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Animal Science (University of Connecticut). It's a testament to the possibilities of out-of-state acceptance to have doctors like Dr. Courtney Campbell, DVM, DACVS-SA , a Connecticut native, mentoring vet med hopefuls at our Pathway event in New Haven, CT! Building a more inclusive vet med culture means reaching out to empower students who may have disadvantages. This includes vet school hopefuls in states that don't offer residency. 🤝🏽 #BlendingVetMed #VeterinaryTechnician #VeterinaryStudent #VeterinaryClinics #Vetstagram #VetMedLife #VeterinaryAssistant
