At TogetherUp we've heard from 100s of internationally qualified OTs about how hard it is to navigate the registration and supervision requirements so you can work here in Australia. Here a some initial tips to get you on the right track from the start.
Wonderful work Natalie Tanner-Black, it's fantastic to see the support that is available to internationally qualified OTs to assist them to make a super successful transition to their career in Australia. Just the acronyms and numbers of stages in the process could be challenging enough! Your depth of experience, supervisory skills and knowledge in this particular area is an asset to the profession.
Love these tips Natalie! I often see posts in online network groups saying "I'm an internationally qualified OT seeking supervision..." I always make a point of saying 'make sure you find someone who is experienced with the AHPRA requirements!!" - then I send them in your direction! I also love that you have setup a networking support group too. With such a complex process to get through, it's often not just help with the logistics that is needed, but having some support and empathy from others who can truly understand what it feels like, that can make all the difference.
Natalie Tanner-Black What a great resource! It's a minefield trying to work out the requirements in another country - at least it was when I did it many years ago from the UK! I love that you're offering ongoing support and networking to help smooth the transition 💟
Solves problems. Makes plans. Loves data. Drives a taxi for 4 children. Does Zumba (badly).
5moThis is so good Natalie Tanner-Black. I think too often overseas trained AHPs feel disempowered in this process. Your advice here suggests that there are a lot of things that these valuable future employees can do to feel like they have a level of control over the process.
