After COVID, many people felt isolated more than ever and needed an outlet. Artificial Intelligence is quickly growing to the point that it can be that outlet. Very cool but a little concerned about how quickly it is advancing. #DCIMCapstone

AI chatbots are increasingly being used to diagnose and treat mental health conditions, and while these tools promise accessibility and affordability, caution is paramount.🤖 Interesting article in National Geographic highlighting worrying experiences some users have had, including one app recommending rock climbing despite being told about suicidal thoughts. This highlights the critical gap between AI responses and the nuanced understanding a human therapist provides. There are also many examples where AI-assisted chatbots have provided must-needed support, and studies have shown that chatbots can dramatically cut down symptoms of depression and distress, at least in the short term. Overall, experts interviewed for the article recommended combining the accessibility of AI chatbots with the human interaction of qualified therapists to reap the greatest benefits. #ai #chatbots #mentalhealth #healthcare

Can AI be utilized to address the overwhelming need for mental health support in the world today? As a coach who supports human beings in large part with my own humanity, the glaring issue with this is AI's lack thereof. While chatbots can replicate undivided attention, unconditional high regard, and certainly be available at all times, missing authentic human connection feels catastrophic. There are some similar vibes as with art created by AI - it hits the marks but where's the humanity? However, as indicated in the article, AI therapy (and other forms of conversation-based support) can address problems of access and be used as part of a care plan. I'm not a therapist, and I'm curious how therapists perceive this.

Acknowledging that AI is definitely not a silver bullet for mental health challenges, is anyone else optimistic about its potential to improve mental health outcomes both at work and in our daily lives? The following article on AI in therapy as chatbots, raises some genuine concerns for vulnerable people being offered potentially unhelpful intervention branded as therapy. Vulnerable people being tempted by unproven therapies is not new. I note its not accredited in the USA.
