Navigating bureaucracy in a new country presents significant challenges for highly educated Ukrainian women refugees. Everyday tasks are often complicated by unfamiliar administrative procedures and an overwhelming amount of paperwork. The extensive documentation requirements, repeated requests, and long waiting periods create immense frustration and delay access to vital services and opportunities. These bureaucratic hurdles not only slow practical integration but also place a psychological burden on individuals striving to rebuild their lives and contribute to their host communities. Simplifying these processes, providing clear guidance, and establishing refugee-friendly support systems are crucial for empowering refugees and ensuring their successful integration. Addressing these barriers is essential to creating more inclusive and accessible systems for those seeking a fresh start. Despite efforts to facilitate their integration, immigrant women often face structural barriers in the workforce, leading many to turn to entrepreneurship as an alternative. Our newly released paper takes a closer look at the unique challenges faced by immigrant women in Jordan and Norway, especially refugees from Syria. It was written as part of the KOMPLEKS project. This analysis sheds light on the policies and programmes that influence immigrant women’s employment and discusses the complex interplay of gender and labour norms. It not only covers targeted efforts to facilitate integration but also considers the broader circumstances of other vulnerable groups such as persons with disabilities, the elderly, and Ukrainian refugees. Discover the full scope of the challenges and the strategies being employed to overcome them: https://lnkd.in/dJwnXpZb International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) Sarah A T. #Migration #MigrationPolicy #ImmigrantWomen #Refugees #Integration #Employment

Congolese refugees have consistently been among the top demographics of ACC newcomers. In FY22, ACC welcomed 79 Congolese refugees, followed by a 67% increase to 132 in FY23. The Democratic Republic of Congo gained independence from Belgium in 1960. Since the late 1990s, the country has been plagued by armed conflicts fueled by ethnic tensions, regional power struggles, and competition over its vast natural resources. The conflict, often referred to as “Africa’s World War”, has caused millions of deaths, directly and indirectly, and has severely affected the population's access to basic services and stability. Despite numerous peace agreements and international interventions. The situation remains fragile, with ongoing instability in the Eastern regions. #CountryBackgrounder #DRC #DemocraticRepublicOfCongo #RefugeesWelcome #Advocacy

Women refugees consistently report poorer settlement outcomes than men. As part of our recent report into settlement outcomes for humanitarian migrants over a 10-year period, we found women had lower levels of work experience, education and language skills on arrival in Australia. And by the tenth year of our study women were 59% less likely to be employed than men. Lead author Dr John van Kooy said supporting women refugees should be a key focus for governments and policymakers. A very important insight about the positive contribution of migrants to Europe. Inclusion must be prioritised in Europe in 2025. This is fundamental to the work and mission of ULS.
If migrants across the EU were as active in self-employment as 30-49 year old native-born men, there would be an additional 1.3 million self-employed migrants. 👉 Today, on International Migrant Day, we celebrate all the people, migrant or with a cross-cultural background, who work tirelessly for a more inclusive society in which everyone has equal chances to build a future for themselves. Some of these remarkable people include: 🔹Teresa Buczkowska, the founder of Migrant Vote. 🔹Raquel Barbosa, a Spanish entrepreneur of African descent who owns a culinary business: La Culpa es del Coulant (Blame it on the Coulant). 🔹Shaza Alrihawi, co-founder of Global Independent Refugee Women Leaders (GIRWL), the The Network for Refugee Voices (NRV) and the Global Refugee-led Network (GRN). 🔹V.Kirstie Adu-Gyamfi Angstmann, an elected member of the Migrants board council of the city of Freiburg (Germany), and a member of the Women's Commission of the same city. You can read more about them on our new article: https://lnkd.in/d_7xD4VW #InternationalMigrantsDay #InternationalMigrantsDay2024 #MigrantsDay

Excited to have participated (representing the Zimbabwe Red Cross Society) in a pivotal workshop focused on addressing migration challenges in Zimbabwe! I had the privilege of contributing to a two-day workshop this past week, aimed at drafting Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the return reintegration of vulnerable migrants in Zimbabwe. With the support of IOM - UN Migration, stakeholders from various government departments and Civil Society Organisations came together to address the pressing need for well-defined SOPs that cater to the needs of vulnerable migrants. Zimbabwe has been receiving a significant number of returnees, including separated and unaccompanied minors, pregnant women, and persons with disabilities, among others. It's essential to ensure their safe and dignified repatriation and reintegration into society. The workshop focused on drafting SOPs that align with existing global, regional and national frameworks, to ensure a holistic and migrants-centered approach. By collaborating with key stakeholders and leveraging the expertise of various we aim to fill operational gaps and empower independent migrants, ultimately fostering inclusive and sustainable reintegration strategies. Looking forward to seeing the actionable policy recommendations and consensus among stakeholders emerge from this collaborative effort! 🤝💼 #Migration #Zimbabwe #SOPs #HumanRights #Empowerment
