Reef restoration is commonly seen as a scientific discipline that is implemented to try and improve the health and resilience of coral. It includes activities such as research on heat tolerant zooxanthellae, hybridisation of warm and cold coral species, sexual reproduction techniques of coral larvae and a host of other innovative and dynamic disciplines to improve our understanding of how to support the health of coral reefs into the future. But restoration is implemented by people. And when you ask people about their experience participating in active reef restoration many of the motivations are emotional and the benefits of restoration increasingly social. This film was produced for #ReefFutures2024 with the aim to highlight the motivations of restoration practitioners. Showcasing some of the people of restoration their hopes, motivations and the reasons why they participate as inspiration to others to help make a difference for the future of coral reefs. While in the field you have to take every opportunity to collect more data!!
This week we're in Bonaire for the Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance reef restoration workshop. Whilst here it provides a good opportunity to collect more light spectroradiometer data from the ocean. This real-world data we use to program our LED on our ex situ coral spawning systems, and is another example of our novel ability to replicate ocean conditions to induce land-based coral spawning events for research and reef restoration. It's high time to reconsider and revamp #conservation and #management #plans for species staggering on the brink of human-caused #extinction. The impact of human activities—such as #habitat #destruction, #pollution, #overexploitation of natural resources, and #climate #change —has been catastrophic, pushing countless species to the edge of survival. Bold, science-driven actions are essential to ensure that future generations inherit a planet rich in #biodiversity rather than a legacy of irreversible losses. https://lnkd.in/eWhGan4q

"Peatlands play an important global role, far beyond what their size might suggest. Covering just 3% of our Earth’s surface, these dense, ancient ecosystems have a profound impact on our planet, storing more carbon than all the world’s forests combined. Peatlands are not only essential for climate change mitigation, they also play a vital role in regulating and purifying water for human consumption, wildlife habitats, and socio-economic development. These rich ecosystems act as safe havens for rare and threatened species of flora and fauna that support local livelihoods. Furthermore, peatlands serve as natural archives of archaeological and cultural heritage." Global Peatland Hotspot Atlas: The State of the World’s Peatlands in Maps 2024, released last week helps to put forward the global context of SWPP's work here in the UK's South West. A reminder of the importance of evidence-based peatland restoration action worldwide, and the huge momentum that we are part of for these vital, yet overlooked, ecosystems. The adventure continues. Day two entailed a visit to Ny Ålesund❤️ here are a few things we learned🤗 PS, kudos to anyone who can identify the other ship in the first clip! 1. **Northernmost civilian settlement:** Ny Ålesund holds the title of being the world’s northernmost civilian settlement, located at 78°55′N latitude in Svalbard, Norway. 2. **Historic polar exploration hub:** It served as a base for numerous historic Arctic expeditions, including those led by Roald Amundsen and Umberto Nobile, making it a significant center for polar exploration. 3. **International research hub:** Today, Ny Ålesund is primarily known as an international research hub, hosting scientific projects from countries around the world, focusing on climate change, atmospheric research, and environmental studies. 4. **Unique wildlife:** Despite its remote location, Ny Ålesund is home to a surprising array of Arctic wildlife, including, Arctic foxes, reindeer, and various bird species, offering researchers a unique opportunity for wildlife observation and study. While polar bears are less frequent, they can venture into the area so the locals keep all doors unlocked in the event they need to seek shelter. 5. **Protected environment:** As part of the Svalbard Treaty, Ny Ålesund and its surrounding area are designated as a nature reserve, ensuring the protection of its fragile Arctic ecosystem for future generations. #hurtigruten #NyÅlesund #svalbardexpress #cruise #norway #svalbard #arctic #arcticadventures

Governments around the world should start directing quantitative easing (read: print money) towards employing as many people as possible to be trained and deployed to do coral reef restoration. Why would this be difficult to do? The economic benefits to each local economy is clear. #sustainability #ocean #oceans
In our recent coral call, our team engaged in critical restoration activities, including the precise fragging and filling of acroporids like staghorn and elkhorn, and the successful reintroduction of fragmented boulder corals to their marine habitats. This work exemplifies more than routine maintenance—it reflects our deep commitment to nurturing resilient and thriving coral reefs. #MarineConservation #CoralRestoration #SustainableOceans

🐠🌱 Another world beneath the waves. With our monitoring plan, we can effectively measure how life returns where it once thrived. We apply a scientific approach and rigour to our #memorialreefs, because when you choose Resting Reef to honour a life that has left us, we want to give you the peace of mind that their legacy has indeed renewed our oceans. 🪸💞 Check out our full Monitoring Plan to see how exactly we'll be measuring the impacts of our memorial reefs: https://lnkd.in/eQUAkr6g #monitoringplan #sustainablestartup #deathcare

🚨The world is currently experiencing a global coral bleaching event. Have you checked on the reefs close to you lately? Are they experiencing bleaching? This is the fourth global bleaching event on record and the second in the last 10 years! Although coral bleaching can have devastating impacts on the local economy, it does not necessarily mean corals will die! In lieu of this, we, at the Coral Restoration Consortium (@coralrestorationconsortium), wanted to remind you of a resource we have! An amazing coral bleaching guidance document, which can serve as a useful response guide for bleaching events like those we are currently experiencing! This document was developed through a collaborative process using the knowledge of practitioners, scientists, experts, and community members working in coral restoration. It's always a good idea to be prepared so make sure to check out this guidance today! Check out the resource here 👇 https://lnkd.in/en8KHbmY

🌍 We need your eyes this Earth Day! 🌊🐠 Just before the last coral mass bleaching event, our team captured more than 25,000 images from 160 reefs across the Great Barrier Reef. We've loaded these images onto the Great Reef Census platform and now we need your help to analyse them. This is a crucial step in helping marine conservationists to better understand the extent of the bleaching. 🌊💙 💻 Whether it's one image or one hundred images ... every click helps! So wherever you are - on the couch, the bus, or at your desk - use your eyes to protect the Reef. 👉 www.greatreefcensus.org #GreatReefCensus #ReefAnalysis #OceanConservation #ProtectOurReefs #ReefConservation #CitizenScience #GreatBarrierReef #GBR #ExploreGBR #OceanConservation #SaveOurOceans #BluePlanet #MarineConservation #OceanHeroes #SustainableOcean #HealthyOceans #OceanAwareness #CitizensGBR #NatureLovers #ClimateAction #EcoWarrior #EarthDay #reefguardians #lovethereef
