It's been just over the halfway mark of a year since I joined as a member of the Oldham Economic Board. As a longstanding business person in the Oldham community, economic growth has always had relevance for me. We work local, yet our projects have reached Europe, USA and Canada. It's something that I'm really proud of and it shows you the impact that can stem when you have a good team behind you. But a priority (that I'm sure is on every manufacturing leaders mind) is: ➡ How do we sustain that skillset over time. People will eventually retire and with less young people entering the workforce, the industry is at a juncture. We need sustainable growth for both current and future generations and if we can't source the labour then it's unlikely to sustain. ➡ Engaging young people in local employment is key to this. That's one of the main reasons why I wanted to join the board. To work with the community members to hopefully contribute valuable recommendations for sustainable growth. I'm excited about the work we're doing and would be keen to hear from other companies. How are you bringing them in and engaging them in training? HERE WE ARE 🙋🏻♀️ A full on day out of our normal surroundings (thank you Duchess of Cornwall - Poundbury), to put together a strategy for the rest of the year. The 3 of us really are becoming a unit 💪🏽 I don’t like to brag but it turns out I’m really good a recruiting good people 😉 Our wonderful Director James Tuckett I headhunted a few years ago and it was one of the best things I ever did. James and I have been on such a journey together and it still feels like it’s just the beginning 🌟. I honestly couldn’t have put my plans in place without this guy by my side. Then there is Charis Nelson - our very own pocket rocket, it took a year to onboard her but she’s already showcasing her amazing contribution to the future of the business. Today a BIG decision was made. In truth, it’s taken me a long time to get over the line with this one. But realising that my own ego was holding me back, I have signed off something today which these two have been keen for me to do for a while. Not meaning to be cringingly cryptic, but change is coming and once the decision was made it immediately felt like the right thing to do.
