Friday the 13th of December marked the end of the 4-week Power Among Us work experience programme at UK Power Networks and what can I say? There is genuinely a lot to mention but first off, a huge thanks to UKPN, Natasha Paramasamy and Jazz Chaggar for this invaluable opportunity. The only reason why I was able to be part of such an experience is because I attended a Motivez Careers Fair event so a massive thanks to them. Week 1 and 2: The main focus was to build up “soft” employability skills such as interpersonal communication, teamwork, problem-solving/critical thinking and presenting skills amongst many others. We met a range of people across the echelons of the business and each of their experiences was honestly inspirational. I learnt that it is not so much about your starting point but the determination put in to take the right steps in reaching your set goal. Your start does not determine your end. That’s why, like Patrick Clarke, you can start as an apprentice and end up as an executive director. Week 3 and 4: There was more of an operational focus, exploring what the field workers do ranging from Craftspersons to Lead Field Engineers. The Operational department is UKPN’s biggest department covering more than half of the business. They are a distributor network operator (DNO) after all so it’s fairly expected. From gaining insight into how the equipment works to being involved in a boardroom meeting for a project worth millions of pounds, this work experience helped me to effectively apply information by being hands-on. To crown it all, open-mindedness has now become my exploration theme for every open door that comes my way. Don't settle for one way of reaching goals, be open to other ways of reaching goals. “Always look fast for the next opportunity.” Stay tuned for what’s next.

Meaningful Tip: Arrange for youth to shadow professionals in their field of interest. When guardians or trusted adults set up workplace visits, young people get the chance to explore different careers that might interest them. Keep Going! My drive to explore and learn seems to be taking me to some pretty awesome places lately! Over the last couple of months, what started as a low hit is now shining the Go-Getter in me.   You know that feeling when you want something, and you set out to get it? I call it "Umph!" Well, I’m on it, focused on building my brand, serving, and giving back as much as I can. I’m confident that I have what it takes.   Yesterday, my networking efforts landed me at the ALX Career Fair. Honestly, at first, I felt awkward for being a bit older. There were so many young people, most probably in their early twenties. But guess what? We were all there for the same reason—to learn, grow, and make connections! The panel of HR experts was amazing. They enlightened and empowered us with insights on how to best position ourselves in the job market. Gathoni M. talk on GRIT hit home for me. She broke it down—grit is about being goal-oriented, resilient, having integrity, and communicating thoughtfully. I mean, that’s the kind of wisdom that sticks! She also addressed the pain we experience in workplaces and reassured us that, despite it all, we recover.
