My colleagues gave three excellent presentations of joint papers on MIMO and RIS at the WCNC 2024 conference last week. If you weren't there, I'm offering a brief summary below and links to the papers. 1) In the first paper, we consider channel estimation with large antenna arrays. We cannot rely on channel statistics since it is too hard to acquire that in practice with such large dimensions. Instead, we use the RS-LS estimator to exploit user-independent statistics. We derive a rate expression and maximize it with respect to the pilot resources. Mert A., Özlem Tuğfe Demir, Emil Björnson, “Pilot Length Optimization with RS-LS Channel Estimation for Extremely Large Aperture Arrays” https://lnkd.in/dWQs29zZ 2) In the second paper, we consider how metasurfaces can be used to improve connectivity inside an airplane. These surfaces can either reflect signals in static but unusual ways or be reconfigured based on the current user channels. We demonstrate that a mix of a few reconfigurable and many static surfaces is the preferred solution. Zhenyu Li, Ozan Alp Topal, Özlem Tuğfe Demir, Emil Björnson, Cicek Cavdar, “Mixed Static and Reconfigurable Metasurface Deployment in Indoor Dense Spaces: How Much Reconfigurability is Needed?” https://lnkd.in/dtPqrARC 3) In the third paper, we study the correlation between the distortion noise created in the ADCs in a receiving antenna array. We prove that the distortion noise is suppressed similarly to the thermal noise but with a somewhat smaller suppression gain. This proves that a multi-antenna transceiver can use ADCs with lower resolution than a corresponding analog phased array since the combined distortion noise is reduced by the digital processing. Erik Kennerland, Bengt Lindoff, Emil Björnson, “Analysis of Quantization Noise Suppression Gains in Digital Phased Arrays” https://lnkd.in/dgHPTd9Z The co-authors of the last paper are with BeammWave, and the research was funded by Vinnova in the program Smartare Elektroniksystem

The article by R. F. Soames Job reviews the effectiveness of speed cameras in reducing crashes and injuries due to speeding. While many studies confirm their positive impact, the results vary widely, leading to some skepticism. The paper examines factors causing these variations, such as differences in camera programs and evaluation methods. It provides recommendations for maximizing the benefits of speed cameras, including better communication, strategic placement, and improved evaluation techniques.

Multi-Regional Input-Output (MRIO) is a powerful tool for understanding economic impacts. This type of analysis makes it possible to demonstrate how the impact of an economic event disperses into other regions and see how these effects in surrounding areas create additional local effects. Want to learn more about MRIO? We're having a webinar tomorrow! On Wednesday, May 29th at 1 p.m., ET, IMPLAN’s Director of Education Services, Angela Slovachek, MURP, CFM, will explore the basics of MRIO, how it compares to single region analyses, how to properly set up an MRIO, and more! Sign up now! #webinar #mrio

While the converter topologies are mostly established and the bill of materials clearly defined, the actual performance of the final product depends a lot on the actual system packaging, protection, and isolation. Such practical aspects can be easily understood from specific design solutions exposed by experts. Attendees at ECCE for these tutorials can expect to learn about the latest technology advances used in packaging and protecting the modern power converters. Join us for these tutorials at ECCE 2024 in October! Anton Z. Miric and Habib Mustain #convertertopologies, #systempackaging, #ecce_2024, #tutorials, #modernpower, #conference
