Global spending on clean energy tech and infrastructure this year is expected to hit a new record. An exciting and important development to reach our sustainability goals. The spending is expected to exceed $3 trillion for the first time. Of course, we’re going to see some disparities in different areas of the world. China remains in the lead and the US is third in this area. The money will go toward varying initiatives, including nuclear power, electrical grids and energy storage systems. It’s crucial that we find ways to generate electricity in cleaner ways. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s recent $861.3 million conditional loan guarantee to Clean Flexible Energy, LLC marks a significant step towards renewable energy in Puerto Rico. This project, featuring two solar PV farms and two standalone battery energy storage systems in Guayama and Salinas, will support 750 construction jobs and over 50 permanent roles, contributing to Puerto Rico's 100% clean energy goal by 2050. These projects are just the tip of the funding iceberg available from the DOE to bring new sustainable solutions to market. Other DOE programs with funding still available include: ⚛️Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program: $160 million for developing advanced nuclear reactors. 🏦CarbonSAFE Initiative: $80 million to advance carbon storage projects. ⛽Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office: $64 million for hydrogen production and utilization projects. ☀️Solar Energy Technologies Office: $52 million to advance solar technologies and grid integration. Forty-five million people live in the area managed by the Midcontinent Independent System Operator, the organization that runs a massive portion of the North American electric grid running from Manitoba, Canada, to the Gulf of Mexico. Inside that footprint are all or parts of 15 states including Iowa, 75,000 miles of transmission lines and nearly 3,000 electric generating units: coal, nuclear, natural gas, wind, solar and hydroelectric plants. But where the northern part of the system meets the southern end — a narrow corridor that traverses a corner of southeast Missouri and northeastern Arkansas — there’s a bottleneck that can hurt electric customers and create major inefficiencies on both sides of the divide. The limited ability to shift power between the regions has been a longstanding concern. But a paper published earlier this year by an energy economist says a major utility company in MISO’s southern region, Entergy, has big financial incentives to resist better transmission connections which the company has been repeatedly accused of doing. #electric grid #transmission #miso #entergy #interconnectors #perverseincentives #gridbottleneck

Recent FERC commissioner writes "With public concerns about costs, transmission advocates now argue that more transmission is needed for grid reliability. Yet, the threat of blackouts is the result of the very net-zero policies that now require more transmission. ... New technology, such as small modular nuclear reactors that can be built at existing power plants that already have transmission access, may negate the need for new transmission lines to serve renewable generators." https://lnkd.in/d64J8Du6

“Though windmills and solar panels get the headlines, the big energy topic in Washington is electric transmission. Whether it is Congress’s newfound interest in permitting reform, the U.S. Department of Energy’s new Grid Deployment Office, or the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s (FERC) upcoming final rule on transmission planning and cost allocation, how to build and pay for long-range transmission to connect generators to customers is considered the final piece in the quest to meet net-zero goals.” Australia like America we have billions of hidden costs not being included by the CSIRO renewables versus nuclear report. Lift the bans Albanese and enable small land footprint nuclear that can use existing coal and diesel sites and interconnectors with reactors that last more than 60 years and don’t blight our land scape and kill our wildlife.

Small nuclear power plants can be built at existing power plant sites, thus eliminating the need for extra transmission. Solar and wind are spread out, making them very hard to connect to the existing grid.
