Business development and marketing for architects, to impact more people, places and the planet | Online CPD Course | 1:1 Consulting | Marketing Mentor sessions
"Time is expensive." That was the headline on a video I watched last week by Alvin Zhu… (I encourage you to go over to his feed and watch it, if you haven't already: https://lnkd.in/gDU83UxV ). … In it, Alvin said that his 6-year degree cost him about $60,000. Which begs the question: if you're graduating as an architect now, what would you have to earn, to make that kind of investment worthwhile? What kind of practice would you work in, and what kind of fees would they charge, to pay their architects the kind of salaries that provide a decent ROI on 6 years and $60k in education costs? And if you're not earning what you're worth - in salaries or fees - how can you change that? (There is an answer: it's business development and marketing!). Keen to hear your thoughts on this one! And if you'd like to read the article I wrote comparing architects' salaries to doctors, lawyers and others in the construction industry, you can find that here: https://lnkd.in/g_znbB6K #architecture #architecturefees #architecturesalaries #australianarchitects

Looking for understanding better employability and the practitioners' perspective regarding the architecture discipline? This article is for you! It questions our current teaching model and, most importantly, shows that practitioners are concerned with the prevailing individualistic approach to the higher education system and traditional architectural teaching methods, instead suggesting a more industry-aligned collaborative disposition. To know more around that topic, follow the publications of Sebastian Smith, current PhD at Griffith University. Smith, S., Dupré, K., Crough, J. (2023) Beyond the hard and soft skills paradigm: an Australian architecture industry perspective on employability and the university/practice divide, Higher Education, Skills and Work-Based Learning 10.1108/HESWBL-07-2023-0197

“What should architecture schools, most of whom depend upon part-time educators, do to address the tremendous gap in the job security and pay between their tenured faculty and adjuncts?” In their latest article with The Architect's Newspaper, professors Peggy Deamer and Tom Fisher share their insights. HIGHER EDUCATION is in the forefront of my mind today. Last week, I created a post about Higher Ed, mainly noting that I am teaching a class, but also that Lerch Bates Inc. delivers consulting services in that space. I started thinking, and curiosity got the best of me...I wanted to see what types of Higher Ed projects we've been involved with as a team throughout the nation. Not only did I find all types of scopes within all of our disciplines, I also found history, architecture, honor & people's choice awards, merit awards, BECx, innovation, and diversity. Do you recognize any of these buildings or campuses (some of my new favs)? #buildingenclosureconsulting #becx #verticaltransportation #facadeaccess #pedestriancirculation #logistics #buildingenvelopeconsulting #repairandmodernization #forensics

Last week, Mary Gillis (Manager, Jones Miami) and Sarah Tarbet (Senior Associate) attended the FEFPA Conference (Florida Education Facilities Planners' Association) in Palm Coast. It was a great opportunity to connect with leaders in education to hear what they are grappling with at their institutions. Some of the takeaways for the conference included: 1) Facilities planners, architects, engineers, and other AEC professionals were very welcoming to us as #FEFPA first timers. 2) We got the sense that both presenters and attendees had an immense pride of place and a commitment to both K-12 and higher education students’ experience and well-being. 3) We discussed emerging concerns among planners including workforce housing for teachers, streamlining facilities’ inventory metrics, and improving processes for space utilization analysis. (and) 4) We had a great time! Of course, @jonesarch always has a great time wherever we go so that is no surprise. #designatyourservice #jonesarch #jonesarchmiami #architecture #planning #highered #highereducation #wholepractice #design

“Leadership and relevance are at stake for the architecture profession now more than ever. From sustainably designed, sourced and operated buildings to healthy and equitable cities, the profession’s firms have the opportunity, if not the obligation, to be more than service providers for clients. To assert ourselves, however, I see the need for a consistent thread to be pulled through from education into the profession’s firms.” In a recent article for DesignIntelligence, ACSA Executive Director Michael Monti lays the foundation for multidimensional architectural education — and accountability. Throughout this piece, Monti shares his thoughts on the value of architectural education in keeping architecture as a respected and relevant profession amid attacks on higher education. He also proposes an expanded, four-dimensional model for architecture graduates.
