I have always been fascinated by how a pitcher uses his arsenal. Each pitch creates a new scenario based on the count, score, inning, runners on base, batter, and many other factors.
I have begun investigating the many factors that go into a pitcher's pitch usage, starting with how pitch usage varies by base state. And since he is still a free agent (as of the time this is posted), who better to start with than Jordan Montgomery?
Here is how often Montgomery used the five pitches in his arsenal in 2023 based on the runners on base. Montgomery went away from his sinker with runners on base, choosing his curveball and fastball more often in these situations. He also used his changeup more frequently with runners on base compared to the bases empty.
I plan on continuing to investigate more pitchers and more variables in the future, so if you have any advice on how to make these tables better in any way - or have a pitcher(s) you would like me to investigate - please let me know! I am always open to feedback on the next steps.
