Who didn't love putting contests as a junior golfer? Playing against your friends for £1, for golf balls or event for a plate of chips, these were serious events. They were more than that though, they allowed us to bond over short contests whilst working on the most important parts of our games. They made us feel like we belonged as part of the junior golf scene at our clubs. In our 11th White Paper, we addressed the issue of belonging. Making new golfers feel like they belong as part of the golfing community is crucial to grow our sport. One idea is to build leagues at your club so that people we can foster this feeling of fun competition and build that feeling of belonging. Discover how to build your golf business by leaning-into making people feel like they belong: https://lnkd.in/eXRvRKPS 📸 : Lukas Opekar (Unsplash)

A time for change The current steady decline in golf club membership and vastly reduced income from the clubhouse generally, are itches that clubs are struggling to scratch. There are a small number of clubs in Scotland, relatively speaking, mainly the ‘Trophy courses’ that notice little difference or an even an increase in clubhouse income, but for the majority, these holes need plugged. The reality is that this will worsen steadily for the majority. The is no evidence to suggest otherwise as all the facts point to: 1. The impact of the financial crisis and energy costs still loom large; 2. The Covid bubble has well and truly burst. Clubs will probably reduce prices, make offers that will irritate existing members and cut costs in the wrong places. Make no mistake, there is no magic wand for the majority, but there are good practices that can reduce costs in the right places, which may offset reduced income. There have been a number of articles recently about the ‘Race to the Bottom’ and they are absolutely accurate. The race has started. Don’t be sucked into this competition as it will damage your club, maybe irreparably. We offer experienced advice at www.golf-insights.co.uk where our help may cost your club nothing at all. Don’t wait any longer or until your next committee meeting. Get in touch if you have noticed this change at your club and allow Golf Insights to help you. #scottishgolf #sgcma

Following the success of SF Hoops, Brett Wischow & I are branching out to create a new league in a new sport. Introducing SF Links, where great folks from all walks of tech come together to play 9 holes of golf and enjoy the most incredible-yet-frustrating sport in the world. Golf can sometimes be an intimidating sport. It's hard to get good at, it can be time consuming, finding the right group isn't easy, and booking tee times can be difficult. We're solving all of that: 🆕 Our commissioners are less-than-stellar golfers and don't care if you're a pro or a noob. ⛳ We will play 9 holes (~2 hours) once every other week, totaling 7 rounds over 14 weeks with a masters-style tournament at the end 4️⃣ We will match you with a different foursome every round, allowing you to get to make new friends and meet people in tech who just want to play a fun round of golf without pretense ⏲ We're booking the tee times for everyone. All you need to do is show up at your designated time We're capping SF Links at 80 people to allow for 20 foursomes a week. Dues are $120. If you'd like to join, feel free to message me or Brett for the league details. If you have any friends you'd like to bring into the league, let us know or have them reach out to us directly. Signups end on May 24th or whenever we get to 80 members - whichever comes first. I'll link the SF Links website in the comments. Hope to see you on the links!

If more companies actually took steps to "grow the game" instead of just repeating the line over and over again, we would all be better for it. Golf consumers are starting to see through those empty words. Here is a simple equation: More golfers + more enjoyment = Increased demand across the industry Let's push each other to do more things that make people feel welcome, break down the cost barriers, and help people learn about this complicated game.
Today, in honor of The Masters, we gave away our kid's golf clubs for FREE. We announced on Instagram and TikTok that from 8am-3pm we would be giving away kid's club for free at the GolfRoots HQ here in Dallas, Texas. Sure enough, folks were waiting in the parking lot before 8, and people streamed in throughout the day. We love getting to share this game, and making golf accessible to kids is a great way to do it. Thank you to the members at our Partner Courses who make this possible. Stay tuned, there may be more to come in this space!

So interesting to hear Gary Neville's insights on the challenges beginners face in golf. It's disheartening to witness newcomers being chastised for not knowing every rule and piece of golf etiquette. No one should be made to feel unwelcome or intimidated, especially kids. This is such a key driver for us at Love Golf UK, breaking down barriers with free equipment hire, coaching sessions and community engagement. Rory McIlroy is spot on - we need more accessible entry points like driving ranges and public golf courses to bridge the gap between interest and actual play. Let's keep asking, what more can we do to make golf inclusive and welcoming for everyone? ⛳ #LoveGolfUK #InclusiveGolf
