Yesterday, I attended the Generation Next Summer Social and Awards and as I heard the nominations, it hit me: the idea that you need to be old to be good at your job is as outdated as dial-up internet. Apprenticeships are proving that talent, skill, and innovation aren't bound by age. Experience used to be measured in years, but now, young professionals are bringing fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to the table. Apprenticeships give them a structured environment to gain hands-on experience and dive into industries they’re passionate about. The phrase “When you’re good enough, you’re old enough” Ian Morgan OBE FCILT is more relevant than ever. Embracing apprenticeships unlocks the potential of young professionals and builds a dynamic workforce. Age shouldn’t be a barrier to opportunity—young talent, given the chance, can achieve extraordinary things. The Generation Next Summer Social and Awards was a testament to this, showcasing the remarkable achievements of young professionals who are already making a significant impact. Take Cerys Goodson, for example. She was nominated for the Apprentice of the year award. Though she didn’t win, her nomination alone speaks volumes about the incredible contributions young professionals are making. Cerys and her peers are living proof that when you’re good enough, you’re old enough. So let's ditch the age-old notion that you need decades of experience to be valuable and start welcoming the young, talented go-getters into the fold. Trust me, they’ve got it covered!

Apprenticeships are incredibly underrated. I believe they are one of the most powerful routes to "smash glass ceilings and break down barriers" for people underrepresented in a profession. Reading stories recently on BBC News of Mazuma, a subscription-based accountancy company co-founded by former apprentice Lucy Cohen and her friend Sophie Hughes, which grew into a multimillion-pound business, are the real stories they don’t tell you at school. Lucy calls this the "earn while you learn" model. She now hires over 70 staff and even creates apprentice placements. I do believe degrees are valuable, however, the application model for most roles needs to change. When you look at the typical application process for a role, many of the questions are about the degree you hold... There needs to be a field where you can select that you are an 'apprentice'. Apprenticeship facts to note: - 48% of apprenticeships started in 2022/23 were by people aged 25 and over. The idea that apprenticeships are "only for school leavers" is a myth. (Source: House of Commons) - As many as 85% of apprentices will stay with their employer. (Source: Reed) - 46% of young school leavers consider apprenticeships as their next step. (Source: UCA) As someone who did an apprenticeship at Google, I believe that’s a far greater achievement than just holding a degree. The skills I obtained accelerated my career in just 13 months, I was able to connect with people I never would of had access to and it provided me with the opportunity to explore what I liked and didn't like. PLUS I made some friends for life! Would I do it again... Absolutely
