RJ can be a powerful process in allowing voices to be heard and understood. A much underused and misunderstood powerful process.
We believe that justice is about accountability, understanding, and empowerment. Yet the Criminal Justice System often leaves people affected by crime feeling excluded and confused. Going through a restorative process allows them to have their voices heard and move on with their lives.

Cancellation reports of criminal cases must be sent through the Superintendent of Police, as mandated by Rule 24.7 of the Police Rules, 1934. This procedure ensures fairness and impartiality in the investigation process, preventing malpractice and arbitrariness. While the Criminal Procedure Code (Cr.P.C.) does not explicitly address cancellation of cases, Section 173(3) grants magistrates inherent power to cancel cases. Despite the introduction of the Police Order, 2002 and subsequent amendments, Rule 24.7 remains in force, emphasizing the exclusive authority of the Superintendent of Police in submitting cancellation reports. The recent Police Order (Amendment) Act, 2013, introduced supervisory officers like Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) to enhance oversight on investigations, but the authority to send cancellation reports still rests with the Superintendent of Police. This distinction is underscored by the mandatory language of Rule 24.7, reinforcing the legislature's intent for its strict adherence. Overall, adherence to procedural rules ensures the effective functioning and integrity of the criminal justice system. #wakalatonline

Happening today: Our conversation on communication, strategy, and data around criminal justice reform. I hope you'll join!
There are weeks you spend writing and weeks you spend sharing what you've done with the world. Today begins one of the latter, with a lot of prep work yet to do. But to start us off, I hope you'll join me on Wednesday at 2:00 for a conversation hosted by the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers on "the art of effective communication around criminal justice reform." There's a lot to say on the subject -- especially as violent crime falls and key attacks on criminal justice reform unravel. NACDL's own Jonathan Hutson will moderate, and my co-panelists are truly some of the best in the field. I'm honored to be included! https://lnkd.in/ecZAFFtE

You found us! Welcome! We'd love for you to help convince #newyorkstate lawmakers to re-examine the well-intentioned but flawed criminal justice reforms that began in 2018/2019 and have had negative #publicsafety impacts. Our current initiative focuses on establishing "risk of public safety" and "repeat offender" standards under bail reform. These would authorize judges to detain accused offenders long enough to intervene and redirect their lives with appropriate social/family/addiction/counseling services, counseling, job development, etc. We are also urging #newyork state legislators to write/rewrite "clean law" statutes so that anyone can understand them—whether defendant or victim, police officer or concerned citizen, prosecutor or defense attorney, judge or jury. Lastly, we oppose "elder parole," which, as proposed, makes any inmate over age 55 with 15 years of their sentence served eligible for parole regardless of their crime. Originating in the Greater #RochesterNY and #fingerlakesregion, we have chapters in Niagara, Erie, Onondaga Counties, the Mohawk Valley, and the Capital-Albany region. As our initiative grows, we plan efforts in other areas of the state, including #NYC and beyond. The CSC brings diverse opinions, positions, concerns, interests, and advocacies together to find legislative common ground to improve public safety in ALL our communities. Our consortium is inclusive. Our membership reflects a cross-section of our communities: crime victims, clergy, business people, community groups, law enforcement, local government, medical and legal professionals, and private citizens. Please follow us on Facebook. We're on Instagram at "csc_ny" You can also find us on X/Twitter @CSC_NY Our website: ourconsortiumny.com We appreciate your interest and input.
