Happy to share the results of our experience on elderly patients with Covid-19 just published on Italian Journal of Medicine. Intersting, the presence of Dementia at the time of admission resulted the single best predictor of 6-month mortality. Stratification according to age and comorbidities provided critical information for a better management of elderly patients. In the U.S., people in some minoritized groups experience higher rates of poor health and disease, including diabetes, hypertension, obesity and more, when compared to White counterparts. ACP’s interactive series on diagnostic excellence offers evidence-based strategies clinicians can use to improve diagnostic decision making by mitigating the effects of unconscious bias related to race, ethnicity, gender, and other identities, leading to improved outcomes for patients. Experienced physician executive with a commitment to improving clinical outcomes and a passion for addressing healthcare disparities| Host of Crossing the Chasm, DEI podcast
"Perhaps most concerning is our observation that poor cardiovascular health remains concentrated in low-income middle-aged adults, a group that consistently had the highest rates of hypertension and diabetes across the study period." "Furthermore, poverty itself has been shown to directly erode cardiovascular health through stress-associated biological pathways. Reducing these persistent income-based inequities will require multilevel interventions that address the upstream determinants of cardiovascular health." It's interesting to me that the income disparities themselves were called out and the distribution of individuals in the low vs. high income groups were not within this study. There's a lot to extract from this study from the increase in the prevalence of diabetes and hyperlipidemia in higher income subgroups to the improved glycemic control over time for the lower income groups. The simple fact is that we collectively must do better to eliminate the identified disparities due to the clinical outcomes and cost associated with poor cardiovascular care. #DEI #diversityequityinclusion #healthequity

Research from Regenstrief and IU School of Medicine reveals the serious health risks of loneliness in older adults. Led by Monica Williams-Farrelly, PhD, Malaz Boustani, M.D., MPH, and Nicole Fowler, PhD, MHSA, the study shows loneliness poses a mortality risk comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day and surpassing alcoholism, obesity and inactivity. With more than 50% of older primary care patients affected, the study suggests primary care clinicians are important to identification and offereing solutions. The Circle of Friends concept, a group-based model, shows promise in reducing loneliness and improving health outcomes. This research highlights the need for collaborative efforts to address loneliness in aging populations. https://lnkd.in/dshRJdBS

#Publichealth is the missing 'link' to address #MASLD #MASH #morbidity & #mortality. Jeffrey V. Lazarus speaking at EASL today. Two additional key points: "Sometimes, though rarely, can #medical orientations close 'the gap' alone. More often, to make great strides in addressing morbidity or #premature mortality, there needs to be a public health #intervention or set of #interventions (e.g., #wholeofsociety) alongside medical interventions."
