Today, thanks to research focused on embedding routine screening in well-baby checkups, the early signs of autism can be identified in children as young as 12–14 months. These efforts, many supported by NIMH, show that making early autism screening part of routine health care can have a significant impact on children and families, helping connect them to support and services as early as possible. Are we comparing apples to oranges here? 🤔🍎🍊 A recent study suggests that higher amounts of intervention may not be more helpful for children on the autism spectrum. This raises a critical question for our community: Are we focusing too much on the quantity of intervention rather than the quality? At Hi Rasmus, we believe it's essential to consider both the quality and quantity of intervention. We provide a flexible platform to deliver the highest quality services. Our mission is to help you keep the focus on the child in front of you. How do we balance the quantity and quality of interventions? How much does quantity matter? Share your thoughts in the comments. https://lnkd.in/g2R-mPkg

The issue here is that ASD assessments are: 👉 being administered by individuals without the clinical knowledge or expertise to assess and identify differential diagnosis. This leads to misdiagnosis, underdiagnosis and overdiagnosis. 👉 being conducted using tools that don’t parallel DSM-5-TR criteria, ie. they are outdated. This also leads to misdiagnosis, underdiagnosis and overdiagnosis.

New article in The Guardian, highlighting just one of the many issues with autism diagnosis in the UK - the postcode lottery. Prof Will Mandy at UCL: "someone could go to one well-established clinic and get one answer as to whether they’re autistic, then go to another well-established clinic and get a completely different answer despite displaying exactly the same behavioural traits”

The snarky side of me read the headline of this article and said, "duh!" It's not the best article, but the point is made. We are doing a disservice to autistic individuals when they don't get a diagnosis. We have to do better—all of us. We have to advocate for these individuals and that starts with education. When we are educated (and that means listening to the actually autistic community) we can educate and help others and get these individuals the help and services they deserve. https://lnkd.in/gcheFGY5
