We are very excited about our campus expansion plans. We have submitted site plans to the City for review, and look forward to public hearings and input. The new interpretive center is reminiscent of a train depot. After all, Susan B. Anthony traveled in and out of Rochester by train, often logging more than 10,000 miles a year as she visited cities and towns across these United States, advocating for human rights and voting rights. Here are two renderings of our building design concept. It has been exciting and inspiring to work with Mark Maddalina and Allison Shannon and their SWBR team, Mike Seaman and Will Tidd at Christa, La Bella, and the amazing exhibit creators at Solid|Light, Inc. The new building will be located at the intersection of Brown Street and Jefferson Avenue, soon to be known as "1 Jefferson Ave."

This is fascinating. We've always known that Arts & Culture are incredibly important aspects of the Vermont lifestyle (and thereby Vermont's economy) but to see the numbers so clearly delineated really drives home the reality that the Arts are a HUGE part of what makes living in the Green Mountain State so incredibly special and vibrant! At BRIC, we're well aware of the variety of ways that the Arts add value and interest and magic to our communities, which is why we're so committed to exploring the intersection between Tech and the Arts as part of our mission. Especially as we're planning and building out our programming for educational pathways, we see this interface as crucial to our success in supporting area youth and entrepreneurs. Rather than just focusing on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) we're rolling with the STEAM model, which incorporates the Arts as a thread of creativity that mingles fluidly with the other four pillars of study. The Arts foster hands-on discovery experiences that help to activate imagination, curiosity, collaboration, creative problem solving, and critical thinking skills, as well as encourage the consideration of aesthetics, design principles and user experience, through process-based learning. Plus the Arts bring a playful element of FUN! Our economy requires ongoing ingenuity in order to thrive, and we believe Arts and Culture are essential to the path of ever-evolving innovation! Thanks to the Vermont Arts Council for everything they do! 💚 -------------------------------------------------------- #artsandculture #thearts #steameducation #ruralinnovation #youthpathways #techlearning #steampunks #rurallifestyle #Vermont #vermontlife #springfieldvt #bricvt

a sobering and important article and this is why I am convinced we need systems transformation.
It's increasingly clear that systemic constraints are going to require us to shift what good looks like and how we deliver good in our places. The traditional visions of our future cities and places has largely ignored systemic constraints (certainly in the short term). And how we operationalize a radically just future within those constraints. This collaboration between CIVIC SQUARE and Dark Matter Labs really sought to delve deep into embracing the scale of the challenge, embracing the scale of the constraints, to find a new space of justice. 3 Degree Neighbourhood: bit.ly/Neighbourhood3

According to a recent poll by The Guardian, nearly 80% of scientists involved in the IPCC expect global temperatures to rise to at least 2.5C above preindustrial levels in this century, while almost half anticipate at least 3C. The dream of keeping our planet to 1.5C is slipping away and we are now in a race to mitigate against the worst effects of the #ClimateBreakdown we are seeing across the world. Europe is heating up faster than anywhere else, as evidenced by the April temperatures we just experienced, which was the 11th straight month of record high temperatures. If we want to avoid the catastrophic floods that we are seeing in Brazil, Afghanistan, and elsewhere, we must start taking this seriously, especially in boroughs within historic flooding boundaries, like Lewisham. Dark Matter Labs and CIVIC SQUARE have put together one of the most important pieces of work I have seen in a while. Local Authorities must radically change our approach to retrofit and neighbourhoods if we are to ensure an inclusive and just transition away from fossil fuels, especially in heating. Please share this work, talk to your council's leaders, and let's figure out how we get this done at scale! Our option paralysis must end, so we can set about getting our homes electrified and protected. It's taken a few months, but I have my newest deep dive history of downtown Gainesville, part two of a three-part history. The 1980's were the first steps in revitalization. By focusing on designing for people and investing in the arts we created the sparks that would make downtown a lively city center by the early 2000's. How we funded that and how these decisions made downtown what it is today was what I focused on. Give it a read and let me know what you think: https://lnkd.in/gdCwxspF

Did you know Menlo Park boasts a rich past that continues to shape its vibrant present? Here are some fascinating facts that unveil the history behind this dynamic city: 🏡 "Menlo" traces its roots back to "Mionloch" in County Galway, Ireland, translating to "small lake." 🏡 Long before European settlers, Menlo Park was home to the Ohlone people when the Portolá expedition arrived in 1769. 🏡 Two Irishmen honored their homeland by naming their vast estate "Menlo Park" in 1854. The entrance featured a grand wooden gate proudly displaying the name and establishment date. 🏡 Since its establishment in 1863, the Menlo Park train station holds the distinction of being California's oldest continuously operating station, pivotal in shaping the town's growth. 🏡 Menlo Park's evolution from a railroad village to a bustling city began with Camp Fremont during World War I. The camp's legacy lives on through the city's infrastructure, including its first paved streets and utility lines. 🏡 Central Elementary School, on El Camino Real, was the first school built by Menlo Park City Elementary School District. 🏡 The San Mateo County Library opened its branch in Central School in 1916, housing a modest collection of only 50 books. 🏡 During World War II, the site of the current SRI International served as Palo Alto General Hospital. 🏡 On March 17, 2019, a reproduction of the historic Menlo Gates was installed at 800 Alma Street, near the Menlo Park public library. 🏡 With nearly 70% of residents holding a bachelor's degree or higher, Menlo Park ranks among California's and the United States' most educated cities. 🏡 Sand Hill Road, called the "Wall Street of the West," is the nucleus of venture capital, attracting investors and startups alike to Menlo Park. 🏡 Home to Meta (formerly Facebook) headquarters, Menlo Park continues to be a hub of innovation and technology, shaping the digital landscape of the modern world. Menlo Park's journey from its early days to its current status as a hub for innovation is truly captivating!
