“I need an engineer with a personality” Ask and you shall receive! The CEO of an electrical controls distributor told me about the Applications Engineer that he was needing to hire. Let’s face it while there are engineers who have great social skills out there, social skills and engineering typically don’t go together. This is probably the main reasons the company wasn’t able to find the ideal Engineer. We were able to put a search plan in place focusing on the hard skills and social skills needed. After we made a short list of engineers we proactively started reaching out to these people one by one and interviewed all people who were: * qualified *interested * available AND great communication skills We found a great electrical engineer who was tired of sitting in a cube, kicking out drawings. He wanted to get involved in projects on a deeper level and get involved with his customers on a personal level helping them solve problems. The CEO has been thrilled with the Applications Engineer’s performance and told me his customers rave about the work the engineer is doing.   They actually have customers specifically requesting this Applications Engineer to work on their projects moving forward.
