No...you can't get high smoking hemp 😅 . It's marijuana's sober cousin 🌿 😇 But it IS a great sustainable (building) material. Actually, it was already used in many different ways throughout history. Here are 5 things you likely didn't know about hemp: 🟢together with bamboo, it is the fastest growing crop in the world, with little to no pesticides 🟢it has a greater capacity to absorb CO₂ per hectare compared to any other crop. 🟢hemp fabric is made using a fraction of the land and water compared to cotton 🟢its fibers can be pressed into blocks and used instead of ceilings, insululation, or flooring, 🟢hemp can be used to create biodegradable plastics Hemp was also one of the first plants to be spun into usable fiber 50,000 years ago (!!!) Gutenberg printed his books on paper made from clothing rags and hemp fibers. And Henry Ford was also a big fan of hemp, using it in a composite material for his Model T (see the video for details) Where did these use cases and knowledge go? These fabrics go by the rather geeky term, “man-made cellulosic fibres”, or MMCFs. Demand for viscose, the third most used fabric in fashion (after polyester and cotton), is expected to double over the next eight years, says Rycroft: “Many brands are looking for a substitute for polyester or virgin cotton, but it’s trading one environmental disaster for another.” “Significant amounts” of viscose come from endangered forests in Brazil, Canada and Indonesia, says Rycroft. “We’ve also noted old-growth forests in Australia – koala habitats – disappearing into the viscose supply-chain. And it’s coming from plantations in Indonesia on peatlands that are incredibly high-carbon.”

🌿 Bamboo Pulp: A Greener Choice for Nonwovens 🌿 Wet-laying/spunlacing (WLS) and carded/pulp (CP) processes have proven effective in creating cost-efficient, biodegradable nonwovens for flushable wipes and single-use wet wipes. But can we improve on the blend of wood-based NBSK (Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft) pulp and viscose/lyocell fibers from an environmental perspective? Absolutely! While extracting pulp from softwood trees (such as pine, spruce, and larch) depletes forest resources that take decades to grow, bamboo pulp offers a much faster-growing, more sustainable alternative. 🌱 Our extensive trials reveal that nonwovens made from bamboo pulp have similar properties to those made from classic NBSK pulp. Hemp4Circularity, an #Interreg NWW project that aims to implement an innovative, local and bio based ecological #long #hemp #fibre is presenting the first results of the project! 👩🌾 👨🌾 The project sets up pilot actions at all #stages of the hemp #textile #value #chain - cultivation, processing, farming, spinning and fabric production - with the final goal to optimize all production stages and implement a durable and from fibre to recycling solutions. For trial crops two varieties of hemp have been used: USO31 and Santhica27 in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. 🚜 The most challenging part was #harvesting and the #weather. Given the very wet weather conditions, harvesting was posticipated, and that lead to greater stem length and also difficulties in scutching. 💪 However, the results for hemp long fibre are promising and the #yields are encouraging. Utilizing cotton waste from the recycling process as a potential weed block material presents an innovative approach. Thanks to Erin Kizer from Material Return, LLC for providing us with the materials for experimentation. During the recycling of cotton, the fiber length diminishes, resulting in fibers that are too short for spinning. This surplus material, which might otherwise go to waste, now finds utility as a weed block material. This scenario underscores the advantages of local apparel manufacturing clusters over global supply chains. While the logistics of transporting such materials on a global scale would be cost-prohibitive, the proximity of Material Return, situated only about 90 miles from our location, facilitated the easy transfer of these materials. Their routine pickups of our cotton scraps for recycling allowed for the seamless inclusion of this surplus material in our initiatives. The waste-not-want-not mentality is an excellent way to drive progress in nonwovens as it encourages us to look at 'waste' products in a different light, helping us to find new uses for them along the way. Take hemp, for example. This material was originally viewed as just a waste byproduct to be disposed of. Now, though, it's become a versatile material and is used to make more sustainable period products and wet wipes.
