Our friends at Moms First are mobilizing communities to Get Child Care on the Record! Child care now costs more than rent in all 50 states, and struggling caregivers deserve action. This election season, candidates up and down the ballot (regardless of party) must not only prioritize bold, transformative solutions to the childcare crisis — but also commit to making them happen. The mission is simple: Collectively raise our voices to ask candidates the crucial question, “Will you prioritize child care in your first 100 days in office?” If we’re going to fix our broken child care system, we need leaders who are ready to find and enact solutions. Did you know that the Dependent Care FSA limit of $5,000 has not been changed since it was created in 1986?(1) If adjusted for inflation, that would be $13,900 in 2024. A great start would be for Congress to update the Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account rules and index it to inflation. In 2022 the average cost of childcare was $14,768. Childcare is considered affordable by the US Department of Health and Human Services when it is "no more than seven percent of a family's income."(2) In 2022 US Family Households had a median income of $95K. Married-couple Families were higher at $115K, and "female-householder, no spouse present" families had a median income of $55K.(3) Sourcing: (1) https://lnkd.in/eUvVZQF4 (2) https://lnkd.in/eQKxmwre (3) https://lnkd.in/erZWYZev

Care's annual Cost of Care Report confirms the childcare crisis... but I think it's still under reflecting how expensive it actually is. On the nanny front, Care's wages are considered notoriously low by many industry leaders. This frustrates us because it influences parent's perception of the market, even those that are secured through other methods like Facebook groups or word of mouth. This has become even more frustrating as parents that previously secured their nanny through an agency are now using Care's numbers as reason not to compensate their nanny fairly and appropriately. Every 6 months I put out a survey through my instagram following and document the findings in a report. It surveys wages and benefits as well as a satisfaction scale, how jobs are being search for and secured, and a closer look at the ins and outs of our work. My original cut off date was last week... but then I realized that Care dot com's Cost of Care Report surveys 2,000 advertised family listings. We currently have over 1,600 responses of real nanny wages (& more info than just that!) So with that— I'm making one last push to get us a comparable sample size. Are you a nanny? Check it out the survey at bit.ly/nanny-census and follow me on Instagram for the results!!

Safe, reliable, affordable, quality child care: ✔️ helps create more equitable workplaces, with particular benefit for working Moms, whose radically undervalued skills and potential workplace contributions are hindered by this issue (I’m biased, *and* it’s true) ✔️ benefits employers ✔️ benefits kids ✔️ benefits the economy ❌ does not ONLY benefit Moms ❌ is not ONLY an issue during infancy ❌ cannot ONLY be solved through paid parental leave (but that’s a start) ✅ is central to the full implementation of the Women, Peace, and Security agenda (ask me how) ✅ is also key to the full implementation of the Youth, Peace, and Security agenda (ask me how!) ⭐️ is an important facet of a thriving economy, an equitable society, and a functioning democracy - - - Make it easier for parents to care for their kids, and watch future generations thrive 🚀 Reshma Saujani Moms First thank you for your leadership and advocacy.
Of course moms would be the ones to *finally* get the answers we need on child care! Tonight at the vice presidential debate, CBS News’ Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan (both moms!) asked JD Vance & Tim Walz not one, not two, not three, but FOUR questions about how they plan to solve the child care crisis in America. And the VP candidates spent nearly 8 minutes debating how to make child care more affordable and accessible for working families. This is a monumental victory for moms everywhere. Not only has child care been elevated to the national stage, but for the first time, we are actually getting the real, substantial policies we deserve. And tonight, both Democrats and Republicans agreed that families need solutions, and they’re ready to bring those solutions to life. Child care is *the* issue of the 2024 election. And that’s because of moms. We are so proud to be in this fight with you. There’s truly nothing moms can’t do.

Media attention towards child care issues in the United States rose significantly during the COVID pandemic, bringing renewed focus to the flaws in our system. To continue this heightened awareness, the Better Life Lab initiated a grant program, providing support to journalists tasked with unraveling the narrative of child care and its pivotal role in our economy, communities, businesses, and families. Their report synthesizes key findings from the resulting series of articles, videos, and illustrations, including… ➡ Federal funding is crucial for high-quality, child care infrastructure, but workplaces, states, and localities are also stepping in to address needs, reflecting a collective effort to find solutions. ➡ Adequate compensation, training, and support for educators in child care lead to longer tenure and reduced burnout, helping to stabilize the workforce and enhance the quality of care. ➡ To raise public support for child care, it's crucial to understand the broad consequences of a broken system on different populations and reconsider how child care is portrayed in the media for increased awareness and understanding. The Better Life Lab played a crucial role in ensuring that the child care crisis, the fact that care is vital infrastructure, and the need for solutions remained at the forefront of the national conversation by supporting independent writers and content creators. At Children's Institute, we appreciate the opportunity to share insights into the child care system from an Oregon perspective through our advocacy and communications efforts. Looking ahead to 2024, we are dedicated to advancing our efforts and further amplifying the stories surrounding the child care system 📝 If you’re a storyteller or journalist writing about early childhood, we would love to connect.
