Rescheduling cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III will likely have impacts on Michigan's cannabis industry. The possible short-term impacts of the policy change include easier banking and financing within the industry, elimination of hiring prohibitions for cannabis users, cannabis research becoming more affordable and accessible, and provide new tax breaks to cannabis companies, which in turn could translate to lower prices for consumers. Prior to Germany, in 2023-2024, several countries took significant steps towards legalizing medical marijuana, including: 1. **Mexico**: In April 2023, Mexico's Supreme Court ruled that the prohibition of the recreational use of marijuana was unconstitutional, paving the way for the legalization of medical marijuana and establishing a framework for its regulation. 2. **New Zealand**: In November 2023, New Zealand held a referendum on the legalization of recreational marijuana, although it did not pass, there is growing support for medical marijuana legalization, with discussions underway to explore its potential benefits. 3. **Luxembourg**: In February 2024, Luxembourg's parliament passed a law legalizing the production, sale, and consumption of recreational cannabis for adults, with provisions for medical marijuana use. Marijuana use alone is not associated with higher odds of car accidents, according to a new study by researchers who looked at drivers who visited emergency departments. In fact, high self-reported acute cannabis use was actually associated with lower odds of a crash. Alcohol, meanwhile—whether used by itself or combined with marijuana—showed a clear correlation with odds of a collision. To arrive at the results, researchers gathered data from emergency departments in Denver, Colorado; Portland, Oregon; and Sacramento, California. Under Ohio Senate Bill 278: Only people 21 and older could buy "adult-use hemp products" containing at least 2.5 milligrams of THC per serving. That includes any kind of THC naturally or artificially derived from the cannabis plant. Users could not smoke or vape marijuana in public places where tobacco smoking is already banned. Ohioans who grow marijuana at home would be required to submit an affidavit to the Division of Cannabis Control pledging not to sell their crop to the public. Under the law approved by voters, home growers can transfer up to six plants to another adult as long as there's no payment or advertising. The illegal cultivation of marijuana at home would be a misdemeanor for the first offense and could escalate to a felony charge. Marijuana businesses could take advantage of tax deductions for the cost of doing business, such as insurance and rent. Certain standalone processors licensed under the medical program would be eligible for an adult-use cultivation license.
