Not sure what the I&M Canal National Heritage Area is exactly? Here's an explanation. Also gives you insight into what I've been working on over the last 28+ years...
The I&M Canal National Heritage Area turns FORTY on Aug. 24... But, what is the I&MCNHA? 🤔
Well, first there was the I&M Canal, a 96-mile hand-dug canal that opened in 1848 and connected the Illinois River to Lake Michigan. The canal was the final link needed to complete an all-water route that ran from the East Coast through the Great Lakes down to the Gulf of Mexico. That route led to extensive growth in the region, including transforming Chicago from a swamp town into a metropolis.
In 1984, Congress and President Ronald Reagan recognized the need to develop a "new kind of national park" that promoted the culture, heritage and economic development of a region that wasn't necessarily on federally owned land. The FIRST of these "national heritage areas" was ours, which supports 5 counties and 60 communities (862 square miles in all) that owe their growth to the canal. The I&MCNHA is marked in blue on the map.
The Canal Corridor Association (CCA) is the nonprofit, coordinating agency that has been given authorization by Congress and works closely with the National Park Service to oversee the I&M Canal National Heritage Area. In this capacity, the CCA has developed the I&M Canal Visitors Center, I&M Canal Boat Tours, numerous events and programming throughout the year and even this social media channel. 😁

Our goal is to build Charlotte's canopy to 50% coverage. Based on data from 2022, if the city and other stakeholders continue with preexisting planting strategies, canopy is projected to steeply decline to 40% coverage. So how do we resist canopy loss while continuing to build coverage?
Three of our staff members presented their solution approach at the Sarah Stevenson Tuesday Forum, including Community Engagement Manager Joi Mayo, Urban Forest Educator Heather Brent, and Executive Director Allison Rhodes. Cooking and Connection: Strengthening Community Bonds
Communities thrive on connections, and what better way to foster them than through the shared experience of cooking? In this post, we'll explore how community-based cooking workshops serve as a catalyst for building and strengthening the bonds that make neighborhoods resilient and vibrant.
KUA and network leaders connect to the Indigenous Guardians programs around the world.
KUA's Kuaaina Advocate Olan Fisher and network leaders Billy Kinney Jr ( Hui Maka'ainana o Makana )and Jerome Kekiwi Jr. ( Na Moku Aupuni O Koolau Hui and theMaui Nui Makai Network )were privileged to contribute to a global gathering and discussion on Indigenous Guardian programs supported by funders like Nia Tero , Resources Legacy Fund , and The Christensen Fund to explore networks Indigenous Guardian Network.
Though the closest thing Hawaii has to this is through Hawaii DLNR (Department of Land and Natural Resources) Makai Watch Program. We believe the state can continue to bolster this program and support greater place based community involvement in management especially in our rural Native Hawaiian communities.
We will continue conversations about guardian programs for Hawai'i as Indigeous communities across the world continue to take up the Auamo.

Protecting polar bears and their habitats is vital for both their survival and our future. As top predators, polar bears help maintain Arctic ecological balance. By preserving their icy homes, we support the health of the entire Arctic ecosystem, which influences global climate and sea levels. This, in turn, helps mitigate climate change impacts on humanity. Thus, safeguarding polar bears is essential for ensuring a sustainable future for us all.
Polar Bears International is the only nonprofit solely dedicated to polar bear conservation. With a passionate team of scientists, conservationists, and volunteers, we're working to ensure a future for polar bears across the Arctic. Learn more about our work in our new About Polar Bears International film.
The City of Waco will receive $3.2 million in funding from the EPA to improve food security, sustainability, and climate resilience in our community. This is part of the larger $17.9 million Community Change Grant awarded to local organizations, spearheaded by Mission Waco.
Over the next three years, the Waco-McLennan County Public Health District will use the funding for county-wide food security and sustainability initiatives, including community gardens, tree planting, and composting. The Health District will also take on the role of supporting the administrative needs of the SCRAP Collective (Sustainable Community and Regenerative Agricultural Project).
The Housing & Community Development Department will use the funds to address lead hazards in low-income homes through the Home Rehabilitation Program.

Hello All,
Let's get real.
This project is another masterpiece of Mr. Steven Levene/COO of Metrolinx.
The steel span Through Plate Girder over existing Tracks at Newmarket 4.90 Davenport has many structural concerns.
Mr. steven leven/(current COO of Metrolinx/ by then VP of RailCiorridor) decided to create a Risk Assessment Team Meeting (on Friday, June 4, 2021 1:30 PM-3:30 PM, ) and chaired this Team meeting.
Created +/-35 pages of check marks, and he concluded that:
all are good, the Case Closed!
The above case was opened by an engineer (Name DELETED] of RailCorridor to begin with.
the steel span was a Through Plate Girder, TPG, +/-100 ft long, double track, and amazingly, Direct Fixation.
Why Direct Fixation instead of Ballasted Deck?
Everyone knows that Direct Fixation will reduce the life-span of the bridge from +100 years to around 30 years.
well Metrolinx has the answer!!!
Also, the girders have top and bottom flange splices, as well as web splices exactly at the same location: one series on the North side of the span and one series on the south side.
the above splices means that the weakest point of the top flange is aligned with the weakest point of the web and aligned with the weakest point of bottom flange, at two separate locations, one on the North side and one on the south side.
you do the math!!!
If you want more information, please let me know.
Also, on September 18th and 19th, 2024, in Louisville, Kentucky, during the Arema Annual Conference, Metrolinx gave a presentation regarding the elevated bridge at Davenport Diamond, Newmarket sub/MX, and New Toronto Sub/(of a real railway).
Ironically, Metrolinx did not talk about this portion (steel double track TOG crossing over the existing tracks of another railway) of the project.
the bridge designer was not part of the presenter team.
The bridge contractor was not part of the presenter team. I doubt that there was even a representative of the actual designer and the actual contractor team at Arema 2024.
The people at the Arema Conf. 2024 were asking why?
Well, the answer is: there is a series of serious issues with that steel span bridge over the New Toronto Tracks.
Stay tuned for more info.
