A new study from leading institutions including Polar Bears International establishes a mechanistic link between climate change-driven sea ice loss and polar bear population declines. The research highlights the urgent need for climate action to protect polar bears, especially vulnerable cubs, as the Arctic warms over four times faster than the global average.

About us
Polar Bears International is the only conservation organization whose sole passion and focus is on polar bears. We’re known for our cutting-edge science, inspired use of media, and relentless drive to ensure polar bears remain a part of the Arctic forever. Vision We envision the long-term survival of polar bears and the unique part of the world they call home. We see this iconic species roaming the sea ice for generations to come. Mission Our mission is to conserve polar bears and the sea ice they depend on. Through media, science, and advocacy, we work to inspire people to care about the Arctic, the threats to its future, and the connection between this remote region and our global climate. Strategic Objectives Serve as the global resource for information regarding polar bears and their habitat. Be the leading voice on climate warming impacts to polar bears and their Arctic home while actively seeking solutions through education, advocacy, and action. Conduct, support, and share scientific research that informs polar bear conservation. Educate an international audience about polar bear conservation and provide mentorship for the actions that will help ensure their survival. Pro-actively and effectively communicate science-based information on polar bears and their conservation. Maintain transparency in fiscal management and sound business policies and practices. New research gives us a fresh glimpse into polar bears’ life on the sea ice, where they are most difficult to access and study. Bears on the sea ice show more variation in weight gain on the sea ice than previously thought, which may make them more vulnerable to loss of summer sea ice. Learn the specifics of these new insights and what they may mean for bears, below.

In one corner of southeast Greenland, a few hundred polar bears have adapted to life on glaciers, rather than sea ice. Unfortunately for those bears—and the rest of us—Greenland’s glaciers are in peril. In 2024, a paper in Nature studied 207 glaciers around the coast of the island and found that 179 had retreated significantly since 1985. As a way to highlight the threat to, and importance of maintaining, glaciers worldwide, the United Nations has designated 2025 as the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation. Learn more about the why and how Greenland's glaciers are melting, and how it's affecting this polar bear subpopulation.

This week, the US government announced plans to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, as it did several years earlier. What will this decision mean for polar bears? To protect the future of polar bears, and our own, the biggest and most important goal is reducing carbon emissions. The Paris Agreement is an important tool to reduce emissions, but it’s not the only one. Read a message from our executive director, below.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our donors, we came close to our end-of-year goal, meaning we’ll be able to continue our efforts to protect polar bear moms and cubs, partner on coexistence efforts, and actively seek conservation successes through research, advocacy, and collaborative projects—all while addressing the overarching threat of climate change. We couldn’t be more grateful for your support of polar bear conservation. The generosity of this community allows us to start the new year with a sense of optimism, knowing that you share our love of the bears and a commitment to their future. From all of us at Polar Bears International, THANK YOU! If you missed your chance to make a year-end gift, there’s still time to support everything we’ve planned in 2025! Every extra dollar will make a difference, helping to fund our work on behalf of polar bears. https://lnkd.in/gHybzF53
