The establishment of the National Park Service in 1916 marked one of the most pivotal moments in American conservation history, setting aside vast swaths of land to preserve the natural beauty of the nation and inspire future generations. More than a century later, The Jäger Company and its Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), the Cattle, Carbon Credits, and Real Estate Fund (CCRE Fund), are embarking on a similarly ambitious project. 📢 🎉 We've done it! 📢 🎉 Ground-breaking first biodiversity net gain S106 completed in Braintree District A developer working in Braintree District secured the required off-site habitat units from our pioneering nature recovery project after maximising the on-site compensation they could achieve. This approach was supported by Braintree District Council through the planning process and secured using the first BNG Section 106 agreement in the district. Edward Worthy ably supported the estate through the legal process. An area of 1.3 hectares of new grassland and scrub will be created and maintained at Spains Hall Estate for at least the next 30 years. Archie Ruggles-Brise, Estate Manager of Spains Hall Estate, said, “This deal is fantastic as it will enable us to dedicate some of our less productive land to nature. This fits brilliantly alongside our transition to sustainable farming and other nature based projects (including our famous beavers who continue to reduce flood risk in Finchingfield!) We hope it is the first of many such deals we secure as we aim to restore over 100 hectares of wildlife habitats on the farm through our Ecological Landscape Plan." Archie added, “Credit should also go to the team at Braintree District Council. This is the first BNG Section 106 agreement they’ve approved, and their collaborative approach was instrumental in getting it done. We hope it will ultimately help establish Braintree District as a focus for sustainable development that results in nature recovery as well as economic growth. ” This first BNG deal builds on many years pioneering work to restore nature at the Spains Hall Estate. Since 2020 the estate have been one of only five Natural England Biodiversity Net Gain pilot sites, helping the government and regulators develop the policy that underpins this and other BNG deals. Ever jumped into the unknown because you feel like if you don't, you'll be stuck forever? Next week, my leap looks set to make a bit more sense. At least to my family who have been looking at me rather puzzled of late. When I started Wilder Work I knew there was something about the mutual restoration of business and our landscape that had such power and meaning. I learned strategy out of books and slideshows, lectures and spreadsheets - enough to grow and sell a business. But it only made sense on a visceral level to me in a regenerative farm when I learned about growing soil instead of growing crops. Boom 💥 it clicked and I felt it. From here, I've explored coaching multi-founder groups and teams across several regenerative farms in Kent. But my ambition was to link it much deeper and wider - into largescale landscape recovery. Next week marks the start of that journey. Knight Frank the managers of a forward thinking ancient family estate got intouch a few months ago, after seeing our work on Instagram, to discuss an opportunity to do just that. From a series of rambling walks across farmland, re-wilding meadows, hidden ancient woodlands and wildflower meadows we have developed a commercial partnership that will see Wilder Work create sites across the 2,700 acre estate. Hopefully, the first of many such partnerships across the UK. The Wawee Valley Foundation is excited to embark on a "landscape level" agroforestry intervention in the Wawee Valley. To ensure its success, we're actively learning from inspiring examples in neighboring provinces. One such example is the Kor Tor Chor project in Nan Province, documented in this insightful RECOFTC article https://lnkd.in/g8yVR2uE This initiative demonstrates the transformative power of agroforestry. Improved livelihoods: Increased income generation for local communities through diverse and sustainable agricultural practices. A big day for us!🌱 After months of planning and preparation, the gates are finally open at one of our locations - this one a 51-acre site in Skinners Farm, Wadhurst, East Sussex. This marks the start of an exciting journey as we transform this land for Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG). We are providing 112 BNG units (fractional and full) for developers seeking to meet their BNG obligations. Positioned on a B-Line between two Biodiversity Opportunity Areas, it forms a headwater catchment with ancient woodland weaving through the site. Taking a nature-first approach, we’ll establish a diverse range of habitats, including: 🌼 Lowland meadows 🍎 Traditional orchards 🌳 Lowland mixed deciduous woodland 🌲 Wet woodland … and so much more! Our goal? A good read on why the Native Tree Area scheme (NTA) may not be as readily accessible as one had hoped. Community led initiatives such as Local Roots can play a much larger role going forward. Not only by growing local, Irish provenance trees, but also giving support to those who would like to apply for the NTA scheme and by bringing the community together for planting trees to increase native woodlands locally.
