Rural businesses, communities and wildlife are increasingly at risk from extreme weather and flooding. Natural England is working in partnership on a number of projects that help improve flood and drought resilience, while driving nature recovery. Some of this work includes: 🤝 The Rural Flood Resilience Partnership - a collaboration of the NFU (National Farmers' Union), Environment Agency (EA), The CLA (Country Landowners Association), Association of Drainage Authorities (ADA) and Action with Communities in Rural England (ACRE), has developed a two-year joint action plan to better protect agricultural businesses and rural communities. 🌱 Natural England advises Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on the development of new agri-environment options for water management to help reduce and manage flood risk. 🌳 Implementation of Landscape Recovery schemes, working with EA on how these can deliver for water 💧Developing and running training on Natural Flood Management (NFM) with our partners, including the EA, and provide advice to partners, farmers and land managers on water management. Since 2022 through our Catchment Sensitive Farming advice programme, we have engaged with at least 60 NFM projects and provided 1-to-1 NFM advice to over 1,500 land holdings. How does Black History Month involve nature? Communities of colour have long had rich, meaningful relationships with nature, but too often those stories have been overlooked. 💚 At Natural England, we want to ensure that the countryside is a welcoming and accessible space for everyone. In our latest blog, Michelle Mangal, Senior Manager, Connecting People with Nature team, reflects on the partnership work Natural England is doing to make England's natural world a more inclusive space. We’ve been part of projects like Putting Down Routes, a scheme in the Kent Downs National Landscape that has been working to engage diverse, underrepresented communities, including groups like Black Girls Hike UK C.I.C, in exploring and deepening their connection the countryside. Everyone should feel able to spend time in nature and enjoy its health benefits. 💚 That’s why we’ve been working with The HEY Smile Foundation in partnership University of York and York St. John University on projects such as Healthy Humber and Nature Champions. The Healthy Humber Project is exploring collaboration opportunities with communities and organisations for projects which use nature connection to aid both nature recovery and health and wellbeing. The Nature Champions project is equipping leaders from ethnic minority backgrounds in the Humber region to help people in their communities engage with nature and support its recovery. Both projects have been a huge success so far, with reported increase in participants’ understanding of the natural world and confidence to engage with nature. Natural England are proud to fund these projects through the Protected Sites Strategies Fund. It's by working together that we can make nature accessible to all. Exciting discovery! A rare group of fungi has been identified in Berkshire. 🍄 Fungi are a mega-diverse kingdom and fundamental to the survival of entire ecosystems, providing essential nutrients and food source for soil, plants and animals. There are more than 18,000 species of fungi in the UK but many species have never been studied. Conservation of fungi is incredibly important, yet much is unknown about this magical kingdom and many species have never been studied. Excitingly, in partnership with Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew Aberystwyth University and The Crown Estate Natural England’s mycologist, Matt Wainhouse has been using eDNA found in soil samples to study and identify rare tooth fungi found in East Berkshire. The second edition of the Dynamic Dunescapes Sand Dune Manager's Handbook is out now! Sand dunes are incredible habitats for an abundance of wildlife. Sadly, the UK has lost nearly 30% of its dune habitat since 1900. That's why we're part of the Dynamic Dunescapes partnership - working with organisations to restore these wonderful features for the benefit of wildlife and people. The handbook supports site managers and landowners to improve the condition of sand dunes and protect the species that enjoy them.
