Happy World Oceans Day, 2024 We call it Earth, but our planet is primarily ocean. It protects us, feeds us and sustains all life. Humans depend on the ocean for survival, but we invest little in return. For years, experts have warned us that there is no life if there is no ocean. Instead of listening, we have made short-sighted decisions that further its decline without understanding what's truly at stake. To protect our planet's beating heart, we must awaken new depths within our own. We must protect our ocean. We live on a blue planet, and it's time we act like it. Wildlife Heritage Areas was co-founded by the World Cetacean Alliance and was born out of the success of the Whale Heritage Sites programme. This illustration was a more recent work I did for my volunteering at @mantasdobrasil. I came to share it with you. 🔎 Oceanic Manta Rays are gentle giants that glible through the oceans, inspiring awe and respect. 1- Imposing Wingspan: With wingspan that can exceed 7m, oceanic manta rays are true queens of the seas. Their broad bodies and distinctive pectoral fins make them an impressive sight in deep waters. 2- Feeding and Filtering: These majestic rays feed mainly on plankton and small marine organisms. Their feeding water through specialized gills, is a marvel of evolutionary adaptation. 3- Elegant Demeanor: Despite their imposing size, oceanic manta rays exhibit a gentle and graceful behavior. Swimming slowly, often close to the surface, they provide a peaceful and magnificent spectacle. 4- Important Conservation: Unfortunately, these creatures are endangered due to indiscriminate fishing and pollution. What a marvelous celebration of our #NationalMarineSanctuaries and our beautiful, blue ocean planet! The words in this new book from National Marine Sanctuary Foundation are lyrical, the photographs inspiring, and the message so important. Our lives depend on a beautiful, healthy, living ocean. This excerpt in Smithsonian Magazine describes the first marine protected areas in the United States, one created right here in Monterey Bay next to Hopkins Marine Station, the other near Scripps Institution of Oceanography near San Diego. (Once again, California was leading the way!) The adventure continues. Day two entailed a visit to Ny Ålesund❤️ here are a few things we learned🤗 PS, kudos to anyone who can identify the other ship in the first clip! 1. **Northernmost civilian settlement:** Ny Ålesund holds the title of being the world’s northernmost civilian settlement, located at 78°55′N latitude in Svalbard, Norway. 2. **Historic polar exploration hub:** It served as a base for numerous historic Arctic expeditions, including those led by Roald Amundsen and Umberto Nobile, making it a significant center for polar exploration. 3. **International research hub:** Today, Ny Ålesund is primarily known as an international research hub, hosting scientific projects from countries around the world, focusing on climate change, atmospheric research, and environmental studies. 4. **Unique wildlife:** Despite its remote location, Ny Ålesund is home to a surprising array of Arctic wildlife, including, Arctic foxes, reindeer, and various bird species, offering researchers a unique opportunity for wildlife observation and study. While polar bears are less frequent, they can venture into the area so the locals keep all doors unlocked in the event they need to seek shelter. 5. **Protected environment:** As part of the Svalbard Treaty, Ny Ålesund and its surrounding area are designated as a nature reserve, ensuring the protection of its fragile Arctic ecosystem for future generations. #hurtigruten #NyÅlesund #svalbardexpress #cruise #norway #svalbard #arctic #arcticadventures

In the Southeast Pacific, off the coast of Chile, underwater mountains create a breathtaking deep-sea landscape where cold-water corals, intricate glass sponges, anemones, and a host of creatures that captivate the imagination are thriving. Nearly half of the animals living here exist nowhere else on Earth. Seamounts are oases for biodiversity; for the last month, an international team of scientists explored this understudied region in our global ocean. Data and imagery collected on the #SEPacificSeamounts expedition will help advance Chile’s effort to establish a high-seas marine protected area along the Nazca and Salas y Gómez Ridges. 🌊 Galápagos Unveils Hidden Wonders Researchers have found two new deepwater coral reefs, including one that spans more than 800 meters around the Galápagos Islands. These reefs, found at depths of 370 to 420 meters, harbor stony coral diversity, crustaceans, and sharks 💡 The study underscores the importance of marine protected areas, as these vibrant ecosystems reside within the Galápagos Marine Reserve—one of Earth's largest protected marine areas.  🌏 As shallow coral reefs grapple with heat stress from ocean warming, these deepwater counterparts remain resilient. The team plans extensive species cataloging through video footage and high-resolution mapping. In this episode of Future World on The Verge, we cover an incredibly important topic - saving critically endangered coral reefs. We partnered with the Coral Restoration Foundation™ to shed light on the issue today. This past summer, conservationists in Florida did something remarkable: they took corals out of the ocean en masse to save them from an ocean heat wave. It’s just one new strategy of many that researchers are trying out around the world to save coral reefs from climate change. They’re also mapping reefs like never before, cloning huge numbers of corals to plant in the wild, and even breeding new heat-resistant species. Will it be enough?
